Does anyone know of an adjustable scope ring specifically designed to be adjustable to help get a scope aligned with a barrel? I've got the tools to lap the rings, but would rather have adjustable rings if possible than use shims to line up the scope.

thanks,

Dave

Redfield, Millet, and others make rings that adjust, or at least the rear ring is adjustable for windage, elevation adjustments can be made by shimming either the front or back base. Now there used to be scope bases made that had both elevation and windage adjustment, Bauch & Lomb made some as did others. I have a couple of sets of them but only one scope that I can use with them, but that was there best design feature, you could transfer one scope from gun to gun without losing zero as the adjustment are in the bases and not the scope.
Some pics below. first one shows mounts with scope attatched on my 8MM Mauser.

next one shows scope unattached, takes about 2 seconds to do.

the is another scope ring assembly with the quick detachment device

two other sets of bases for a 1903 and an 03-A3 springfields

I am always on the lookout for another scope to fit the above rings, there are rings that will mount a scope with adjustments but only ever saw one and couldn't pry it away from the guy that owned it. Always looking for other bases for other rifles too, Mausers in particular.

I have always prefered rings and bases that were adjustable so that I can centralise the scope's adjustment in the centre, allowing me maximum adjustment either way. having said that, I use Leupold scopes mostly and once set up never touch them until I move them to another rifle. Been wasting my time it seems :)

The concept is sound for a long range / sniper style rifle I suppose.

Mick.

I think Lynx make the old Aussie Tasco tapered stud mounted rings now, they give you huge adjustment.

You guys are saying things along the same lines as I'm thinking. I want the rings adjustable so I don't have to shim for windage, as that generally leaves the shim visible and I've never liked that sort of thing.

I'd rather mount the bottom half of the rings, lay the scope in, get things as much aligned as possible with the scope's adjustments untouched, then lap the rings and put the top half of the rings on. Then when heading to the range, not a lot of the scope's adjustment is used, allowing the scope's adjustments to be used for shooting conditions, instead of compensating for scope base mounts.

BTW, this is a couple of milsurp Romanian .22's I'm doing the work on. I've shot them and discovering the inherent accuracy potential of the cheap little guns, can't resist free floating the barrels, doing trigger jobs and everything else I can to enhance the shooting potential. I just love souping up a model T and beating a corvette with it. (grin)

The rifle club I've recently joined also has a .22 caliber scoped rifle competition and I would just love to go in there and give them heck with that cheap little trainer.

Dave

Has anyone tried shiming with metal tape? Beagleing the base? Gianni.

Leupold, Redfield and Burris have rings/bases that are adjustable for windage. Redfield also made 1" and 30mm (I have each and they work quite nicely - can post photo if you want) windage adjustable rings that fit on Weaver type bases. If you are talking about elevation then I shim the bases not the rings.

Larry,

Thanks for the information. Anyone know a good place to buy the rings "lexx expensively" online? I would certainly shim the bases as well.

Mine was more of a side track than a highjack, what I was asking was if anyone had ever shimmed with tape vs shim stock, or in my Dads case cut down feeler gauges. Gianni.

You could use and air rifle mount for a grooved reciever. Many of the makers have both windage and elevation adjustable mounts. I just put an RWS C-mount on and RWS 36 springer and I think it would be a nice touch on a 22. This mount will also allow cant of the scope due to gimbles in the base/ring setup. The rws c-mount is about $50. Beeman makes a nice grooved reciever mount also. Go to pyramid air website and look at the mounts/rings.

You might also look at the b-square wcatalog/website for dovetail rings. Air rifles especially break barrel springers need to have the ability you are looking for in a set of rings.
