I would like to duplicate the .50 385gr Hornady Great Plains bullet that I shoot in my Rem 700 ML. I inderstand these are swaged bullets. I have read that the Lyman mold is not the same as the Hornady bullets. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Ken

What did you figure out? I'd like to find a mold like the Hornady Great Plains. My 54 and 50 love those bullets.

I chased that tail for a while.
I tried the RCBS North South Skirmish bullet for a while. I got some good results with the bullet. The only problem I saw was the meplat was way different. This would change the was it worked on game. I used it paper patched and it shot good 50 yard groups.

I tried the Lyman plains bullet and it was a miserable mould and not worth two squirts of cat pee.

I finally quit even trying to find a replacement. I went with the Lee C-501-440-RF. I paper patched the bullet. I have had great luck with the accuracy of this bullet.

I had such great luck with them on target I wanted to use them on game. All I can say it they work great on game. The wide meplat puts the smack down on them. Ron

I shoot the Lyman in a 50 caliber Remington 700 ML and it shoots great. While my eyes aren't good enough, a guy I know shoots the same rifle and bullet has shot three shot clover leaves at 100 yards with them. Makes you wonder what the difference is in the guns that would make such an extreme difference in performance.

My guess is bore diameter. The Lyman is supposed to be a .508 dia. At least that is what it says in the midway catalog. Mine measured .504 on the top band. I sent it back to Lyman and they said it was within specs. I sold it and got a better mould. Ron

What I found is that there is not a comparable mold. The HGP bullet is swaged with a concave base. I found out that to date I was SOL. I found lots of negative info on the lyman bullet.

Thanks Joken,

That's what I ran into also when I was searching. I thought you may have found something I didn't.
