I've got a 38 / 357 mold that is casting a 170 gr. Keith bullet. I also have an RCBS Little Dandy with a # 12 rotor that is throwing 8.8 grs. of 2400. Can someone give me an idea of what the ballistics of this load would be out of a 6 inch 38 Spec revolver with this combination in W-W 38 Spec. cases.

About 900 fps. In my 6" k-38 10.5/2400 with that bullet is a little over 1000 fps.

700 fps and about 13,500 - 14,00 CUP.
You are just as well off with BE or RD. and it takes so much less.

Thanks fellas :

OK, may shoot a few just to see what they do. I once read that 8.0 grs. of 2400 was a very accurate 38 Spec. load ? ? ?

2400 doesn't really show it's potential until you get into mag level loads for the 357.

+1 to the BE or RD

unique might be another option to look at as well

Think I'll abandon this 2400 for light 38 Spec. loads and head toward B'eye and Red Dot.

I loaded that bullet years ago for a S&W Model 10 6" bbl. Unique worked well, but didn't measure real consistant, went to SR4756 and got really good accuracy and it was a light load. The BE an RD powders will work well too, but SR4756 burned cleaner for me.

I really like BE in 38 Special.

I load that same boolit in 38spl cases with 5.0 gr of IMRsr4756 powder and a SP primer (ww, Rem, Tula) nice mild load around 900 - 1000 fps clean and for me in my 6" GP100 very accurate. I got to using that load because I have A lot of that powder but I have been very pleased with the results. you may be pleasantly surprised as I was with it.

After I posted last night I should have made this suggestion to you. If you do shoot that load in a DA revolver make sure you have the muzzle straight up when you eject the cartridges.. Otherwise you will get unburnt powder under your extractor star and tie the gun up. BTW 5 grs of Unique with 358429 is 875-900 fps and <3" accurate @ 50 yds out of both my GP100 and K-38. IMO way better choice than 2400.

The only real reason I ever made this post was that I found a # 12 router for my Little Dandy for 8.8 grs. of 2400 and the fact that I already had on hand, 16 lbs of 2400 powder.

Turns out that based on everyone's comments, it isn't going to work out so well. So....., I'll head in another direction with quicker powders like Unique, Red Dot, 231 and B'eye.

Many thanks,

Ben
