I have a marlin 336 in 30 30 that I want to start shooting cast ammo in and I wonderd about shooting it with a gas check and the same bullet with out gas checks for reduced loads. Will this even work I guess is what im asking and do I need to have the sizing die shaft hollowed out doe the base of the bullet to fit in? Thanks for your help

It will work fine.

I do it all the time.

I use the
Lee C309-170-F
Lyman 311041
Lyman 311291

You do not need a different mold.

I do find that without the gas check accuracy disappears somewhere between 1300 and 1800 fps.

See http://www.reloadingtips.com/pages/exp_111201a_lla_test.htm

for detals of testing with the Lee bullet with and without gas check.

Alright thats good news then. I slugged my rifle and it mics out at .308. It has the microgroov rifiling so I was and I figure 2 thou over should hit the spot. The 170 grain lee mold says that it is 309. What is your experiance with the actual size that it comes out at if that makes any sense

Just shoot some. If it works- great. If it doesn't- then you'll know.

Also, I have no idea what this means, ".... and do I need to have the sizing die shaft hollowed out doe the base of the bullet to fit in?" :veryconfu

Thanks for the discussion and links - I'm looking at purchasing a gas check maker and now the choice is which molds to buy. Gas check molds and shoot them sometimes without checks, or get Pat Marlin's plain base check maker?

Theres a great big whole section down the page called "GAS CHECKS" that was set up just to answer your question, which gets asked about 300 times a year.

The part of the sizing die that moves or pushes the bullet back out. I wonder if I size a boolet with out a gas check if the lube will get in the area where the gas check goes. Maybe to solve that would it be a good idea to hollow out the shaft if you will to let that part of the base fit in there so that it is not coated with lube?

Mine drops exactly .309 with COWWs.

Mine drops .3105" with wheel weights plus about 1% tin.

I've done a lot of experimentation with several boolits in my Marlin sans checks, and the problem I was having was throat leading and the first inch of the barrel leading. I ended up using a standard-groove version of Ranch Dog's WFN 165-grain boolit, which has a fatter, longer ogive with no step to the body diameter. It fit the throat, sealed better, and shot fine without the checks. Accuracy departed somewhere between 1400 and 1500 fps, and I tried several powders to adjust the pressure curve. No matter, it seemed to be a velocity limitation on accuracy. My best load used a pinch of Longshot to get about 1380 fps with the Ranch Dog copy and no leading, the Lee and 311041 both needed to be seated out farther to not lead, and had to be single loaded but did well at under 1400 fps.

My Lee 309-170-F drops bullets at .3105 to .3115.

I originally sized them 311 but I have quit sizing them and now shoot them as cast.

Never tried it but have been tempted with the 300 grain lee 430

For your UN GAS CHECKED boolits, try tumble lubing with LEE LIQUID ALOX or JOHNSONS PASTE WAX or 45/45/10. Mic a few and see if you really need to size them.....310 or .311, I'd use as cast

I'm using 311041...bought lubed from OREGON TRAIL (bless me brothers for I have sinned!) with gas checks and a spare group buy mould some kind soul sold me that is a plain base version of same. I'm used water dropped wheel weights and a tiny bit of tin to help fill out. A ballard rifled 336 Cowboy, a micro groove TEXAN and a 336A with 24 inch barrel. I need to get busy on loads for them now that I'm retired.

Do a search on this site for gmdr and look what he has to say on low end loads. A ton of data on a lot of calibers.
