How big can you go ? I can't find a .277 mold anywhere, can I guy use ,284 w/checks and get by?

I would vote no personally even if you could size it down that far. Unless you did a pp biological.

In a word, NO. Dangerous practice and not advisable. Beagle a 277 mold to get the size you need.

You can. And I do it with very good accuracy in a Model 700 that I won at a gun raffle. (I am a Winchester man!!!)

I size the 287346, which is a .284/7mm boolit down to 0.278". It is a gascheck design...

I have shot 10-shot groups at 100 yards that were 1.25". Three shot groups will always stay at M.O.A. out to 150 yards. Things start going down hill at 200 yards though...

You should be able to find a Lyman 280642 (for the 270 Winchester) if you want to purchase it new. Although, I purchased mine probably 10 years ago, so I really don't know of the availability of them presently...

I use XMP-5744 with both boolits. Velocity is not wicked, but they hit targets...

When you size a 287346 down to 0.278" you do reduce the lube groove some...

So, I do it, but you must make the decision yourself...

Good-luck...

I am shocked.

I looked everywhere I could think of and nobody has .270 molds in stock.
They do list them as 'backorder ok".

It is quite safe to do as BCB does it. As long as it's sized down what's the problem? I would use 7mm GCs and and lube the bullets prior to sizing, this preserves the lube grooves. I regularly shoot 8mm bullets sized down to .316 for use in oversized .31 cals. Besides I have tested up to .314 sized cast in .30 cals and haven't found any measureable increase in pressure during tests. The bullets are sized to .308 during one bearing length into the throat/leade/bore.

if you put lube in the grooves first you will retain them better

I think Waksupi still has some used lube grooves for sale if you damage yours and need to replace them

I shoot the NOE 316299 in my M44 M/N. The groove diameter slugs at .313. The throat is tapered from .317 down to the groove diameter. I would really have liked the NOE 316299 to have been .317. It is however, only .3155.
I also have been trying the Lyman 31950 boolit. It weighs an advertised 105 grains. Mine drops at 103 grains. It drops .319 diameter, then I size it down to .317.
If I shot a 270, I would not hesitate to make me some boolits out of 7mm's.
I read somewhere that P.O. Ackley loaded and shot an 8mm .323 jacketed bullet in a 30-06 rifle.

I WOULD SIzE THOSE BULLETS DOWN IN A LEE TYPE PUSH THROUGH SIZER; THAT WOULD KEEP THEM FROM GETTING BENT.
