My Dad Got A Mold That Has A LITTLE Crater In One Of The Mold Blocks (VERY MINOR) I Do Not Own A Mold That Has That Kind Of Damage.

My Question Is That If The Crater In The Mold Would Show Up On The Boolit Once Cast?

Thanks,

Jason

If it is in the bullet cavity it will probably show up. Got any pics?

It might be a problem, it might not be. Cast a few and post pics.

That small a pit will have little/no negative effect on accuracy. Actually, it may be beneficial since you can easily orient* the CB in the case and when loading as there will be a tiny raised surface on the nose.

*When putting the loaded round in your rifle, make sure the tiny bump is at the 12 o'clock position when viewed from above.

+1 - Some benchrest shooters purposely put a ding in the cavity to orient the boolit.

That pit shouldn't even cause the boolit to stick in the mold, in my opinion.

I have an early Ideal DC 311290 mould that has the same marks. They are simply prick punched into the cavity for orientation as Maven has suggested. Come to think of it...I have another DC Ideal 30cal mould that features a cavity prick punch once in one cavity, and double punched in the second. Such moulds eventually explain themselves...cavity identity, as well as the ability to index the boolit to the same position for chambering.

Scott

Shouldn't be a problem. I would suggest that after casting if it bothers you then take a file to the boolit and remove the little lump, IMHO. BC

The pit in the mold cavity will become a lump on the boolit.

If it bothers you or the boolit sticks you can clean the pit then fill it with JB Weld. It will stay in there for awhile but you will have to fill it again later.

I am almost certain that is for an orientation mark as other posters have said. Try putting it in the same place in the cartridge headstamp, and putting the headstamp in the same place in the gun's bolt for 10 shots and then shoot 10 oriented any which way. You may just turn out to be happy that it is there.

Jason, You're Wasting Your Time Worrying About This. It Will Make No Difference In The Accuracy Or Functionality Of The Bullets Produced In Your Mould.

Fill it in with some J.B. Weld or sell it off. [smilie=1:

My bet is somebody did that on purpose to orient the boolits when loading to try
to improve accuracy. I have a two cav LBT that I bought used that has a center punch
mark a bit farther aft than your mark, in one cavity. It shows up as a little bump on the
boolit and you can sort them by cavity and shoot a group from one cavity if you want to.

Why let it bother you, your gun won't care.

I learned long ago that if the gun likes the ammo I don't care what it looks like. A happy gun makes me happy far more than pretty ammo that doesn't shoot for .......

The bump on the resulting boolits will make less difference on the targets than not using it to index the cartridges identically through several firings.

I bet it was actually put there to orient the boolit
will not affect accuracy
