I have one of the new Lyman lubrisizers with the capability of taking the internal heating unit. I have used the CH heated plate with thermostat under older units with good results, but always ended up running on low. Medium and high were way too hot. Will the Lyman overheat the lube also? Has anybody rigged up a thermostat or rheostat to control the temp? Or is it not necessary with this unit?

I use a dimmer switch with good results. I use this unit for my Magma/Star sizer.

I use a hard lube, carnuba red, and run pretty fast. Although with 50/50 or other lubes, I just unplug the pin heater if the lube gets too hot. There are guys that have made a controller.

I use this to control the heat on my lubesizer heater:

It comes already built and easy to use.

I have great results with it.

I use same HF heat controller. Slick. Works. Compact. Convenient

When I figured the price of chasing the parts to make one and cost of such parts,
it was cheaper by far to buy this and have something that was purpose
built and handy.

If I was sitting on a pile of parts (money already spent), one could fabricate such
a device and there are threads on this forum of those who did with dimmer switches.

I got my HF unit for $15 on sale: very happy with it.

I use one of these after getting the tip from Whistler.

It's awesome. No affiliation, happy customer.

I had the parts laying around the house.

Thanks for all the tips, but I guess I should re-phrase the question. If let alone without any other devices, what temp will the Internal Lyman heater get to?

I don't know what the maximum temperature is. I let the heater reach maximum once. Lube went everywhere. What a mess. You'll want to control the temperature.

I use the speed control for my Dremel tool.

+1 Ugluck

Like the fact that it has a digital read-out so you can see temp.

Ira,

I have the new Lyman as well with Red Rooster lube(a hard lube), With a full cylinder of lube I let it heat up for 45 mins, and then go to it. I move briskly and even then I will need to prerodically unplug the heater for 15 mins now and then to regulate the lube temp. I can tell by the feel of the lube when it getting too mushy to the touch. I like the lube to very firm as it pops out of the sizing die. With in a min it is completely hardened again.

Using Carnuba Red in a Lyman 4500, I can outrun it on big bore boolits, 41s and 44s. I just sit down and do several hundred, as long as I keep going as fast as I can, it doesn't get too hot.
Then again, I'm right beside the wall plug if it does.

Do any of you use your PID to control the heat to your lube sizer. I am just setting up a heater with my PID.

thought about it but Ugluck's fish bowl heater is cheaper and does the same thing

I've got a light-dimmer built in to a socket on my wall. It works fine.
