I just picked up a SAA and have the dies and brass on the way. I notice Lee doesn't make a 'pistol' mold in .454, only .452 (which might be ok, I have to slug the bore yet). But I do have a .454 REAL mold for my muzzleloader. Any reason not to use this on the SAA?

Also, what are your favorite loads? I tried the search function but it keeps excluding 45 and colt as too common or short a term.

Edit that, it's the .454 minie 298 grain, not the REAL mold. At the upper end for the .45 colt for weight but I still think it is worth a try, especially if I load up some BP loads.

I would start at 4.8 grains of Unique, and work up, .2 grains at a time to 6.0 grains max. Before I did any real loading I'd make a dummy and test it for fit. Also ML boolits are usually cast from pure lead, which is not the ideal alloy for cast boolits in cartridge firearms, unless pressures are kept very mild.

Since you don't have the gun yet, you really don't know what diameter boolit you will need. You can probably load the 45 Minie in a LC but it has shallow lube grooves and it will have to be loaded very low charges or you will blow out the skirt.

JFTR - Just because a Lee mold is listed at .452" doesn't mean it will actually cast .452".
