would make for very expensive bullet that produced lots of diamond dust on impact. While extremely hard, diamonds are not particularly ductile and would vaporize on impact without having much of any effect on hard objects. Don't believe me, put a diamond on an anvil and smack it with a hammer. It wont be the hammer that breaks. (And SWMBO will likely kill you for breaking her diamond so for obvious reasons I don't recommend this experiment).

Diamonds=bad, silver = good. Good werewolf defense that is.

If the diamond tipped bullet only wounds, the person being shot will get diamond dust in their veins and will forever more crave pink guns.

Considering there is well over 50,000 years of cast boolit experience on this board, and no one has yet seen fit to play with that particular notion, I would suggest it is a waste of time.
However, there is always someone who wants to re-invent the wheel.....

I think that if you are shooting diamond boolits you already OWN pink guns.:kidding:

Hey fellas, anyone remember waaaaaaaaaaaayyy back to the original Star Trek tv programs?
Cap't Kirk took out a "lizard man creature" on another planet with diamonds for projectiles. He was running around, trying to elude said creature whilst he took handfulls of sulfur, charcoal and potasium to make his propellant for his hand cannon.
The diamonds did the job.

What effect would they have?
They would rapidly deplete your bank account.

I like to use 2 carat stones in a Lee double ended wad cutter. I put the stones in the mold then pour it full of molten pure tin. Pure tin necessary besause it melts at low temperatures and doesn't scortch the diamond. I tried cerrosafe but it just cost to much. These boolits really scratched up the barrel of my Martha Stooart custom Hipoint, but it was covered by the warranty

They would be pretty.

Anyone you shot would be dazzled by the blinding reflection of light from the facets and unable to duck.

NO, really, it wouldn't be any use. The lead would be softer and the diamond would push back into the lead if it hit a harder surface.

The cast lead boolit is quite good enough at penetrating the hides of most things that need perforation.
I know guys that seem to always be preparing for the opening of hunting season on Blue-Helmeted Interlopers, and they have done some research on target effectiveness.
If it is hardened (like a Blue Helmeted Interloper) think monolithic solids such as the Barnes Banded Solids or load up some black-tip AP. Even the SS109 .223 is better than nothing but it isn't even considered AP by the ATF. Recently ATF raided an ammo company for loading the Barnes Banded in 22 caliber (223, FN 5.7, etc) citing the use of 22-caliber ARs making it now a pistol caliber.

are they illegal? It's hard to imagine they would be illegal. Why would anyone think of such a law? As to the effect? Well, one would need to establish what size diamond is being considered. It might facilitate boolit expansion by forming a 'hollow nose' under the diamond. One could find out by substituting a light but harder than lead material like aluminium for testing. A step further would be a ceramic tip but starts to get expensive. What sort of target material were you thinking of?

Now that everyone has raked you over the coals for asking, can I ask why and where you came up with this idea?

Ah, the MIM of diamond ammo.

I foresee thousands of threads starting with new boolit casters asking "how can I make sure my diamond rounds don't have zirconia in them?" and I foresee "cubic zirconia" getting abbreviated to "cubzirc" and "CZ".

Flee. Flee in terror. Warn others.

You can hammer with a diamond, but you cannot hammer a diamond.
I can re-tip rings with diamonds, there is no scorching. I do suspact though, if you cast a diamond into a casting like that, on firing, there might be a lot of dust.
Might do good on paper though.

Hello Bunkerguy. Don't let anyone talk you out of your idea. I'm here to help !! I don't know how they would shoot or if they would be legal and don't care.
But I'm willing to give them a try. Send me a couple boxes, BIG boxes.

I think bunkerguy may not be referring to "diamond" as in mineral/gemstone but to the pentagonal "diamond"-shaped hollow points such as those on the Mihec Group Buy molds ! ??

I rather suspect that bunkerguy has a touch of adolescentitis, in which anything that is the mostest is automatically assumed to be the bestest. A side symptom is the belief that unlimited amounts of money just happen.

If my memory serves me correctly, didnt Kirk refuse to finish off the Lizard for someone elses amusement?

I got a funny notion that the OP is talking about moulds like the 360 156gr SP that produce a pencil point nose.

If so; No, they are not illegal to cast or shoot.

Not to hijack but regarding the Star Trek episode. I remember it as being the first time I heard the formula.

for black powder.

Always think of it when dealing with BP.

No, he shot him and then refused to kill him for amusement, thereby winning the respect of the folks who put him on the planet.

It was a clear case of failure to win the fight.

Y'all keep in mind that diamonds are not particularly rare or expensive. Think industrial grade diamonds, not gem stones.

I think the OP would have got much more serious responses with far less flack if he had said "carbide tipped" instead of "diamond tipped".

Make sure ou keep tha bullet centered, can you imagine the bore wear with a diamond going down the inside of the barrel?

Instead of that kind of "ice", why not just make projectiles out of frozen water... much less expensive, and just as unusual.

What kind of heater do you smelt ice with?
