Do any of you folks have a ballistic data program that will estimate the pressure of a given propellant charge for a cartridge/bullet combination? If so, would you run the numbers for me: .38-55 Winchester, 255 gr cast, standard primer, 34 grain Reloader 19.
Thanks in advance,
Dan Cash

Dan, contact Western Powder Co. in Miles City, not far from you. They have a ballistics lab and will answer some questions on the phone or email. Interesting question, by the way.

Thanks for the suggestion which I will follow on Tuesday next. This load shoots exceptionally well (1 1/2-2 inches at 100) in my original 1893 Marlin 1894-95 vintage) but I don't want to over pressure the old gal. Pressure seems quite mild but I have not been able to chronograph the load due to wind, wind and more wind.

Dan, I think you otta provide the cartridge case information as well.

...and bearing length, distance seated off lands, actual loaded case volume, alloy hardness, and a few others.

Cases are .38-55 Winchester made by Starline. Original length. I would not know what more to say about the case.

Thanks Gear. I can measure the bearing length and the aloy hardness. If I knew the answers to all the rest, I probably would not be asking.

To get a good guess out of Quickload, we'd need to know the COAL, design and length of the boolit, and the capacity of an empty case in grains of water filled right to the brim, meniscus up.

What BD said more than happy to help, but need that info.
