My "standard" bullet for the .45 Colt is a Mihec clone of the RCBS 45-270-SAA. It weighs in at about 285 grs in my alloy and shoots very well. I also have it in hollow point form and it weighs, as I remember, about 270 grs hollow pointed.

Dave Scoville designed that bullet for Colt SAA and it works well in every .45 Colt I have seen it used in.

I have good luck with a Lyman 452424 in both rifle and revolvers.

+1 I have the Mihec 270-SAA Solid also and it's fast becoming my favorite bullet.

I'm looking forward to a NOE 454 255Gr. RF under the tree. Looks like a good bullet too.

I suggest model 19151 for 45 "long colt". Make double sure you do have teh right cartridge because that model number you gave has "1911" as part of it and the famous 1911 pistol is NOT 45Long Colt. The model of die set I recommen comes with internal case sizers a tad bit larger to be more appropriate for our lead boolits whereas others are often gagued for copper clads.

ps: I am biased, but I prefer teh PRS boolit for the long colt, available from Big Lube Bullets as a mould 454-250-RF. The Lyman or Ideal 454190 is an excellent choice too and the Lee 452-255-RF is an easy to cast inexpnsive mould that works great so long as you use only smokeless powder. The irst two I mentioned are at home with real gunpowder as well as the modern fad stuff.

I use the RCBS .45 Colt Cowboy 3 die carbide set #19151. It is especially made for loading cowboy rounds using lead bullets. They even are made to look "period correct".

"Built to slightly different dimensions than the regular RCBS dies to allow optimum sizing, expanding, seating and crimping needed to load great lead bullet ammo. Heat treated for a more authentic appearance. Handsome brass lock rings and period style packaging complement these premium dies."

It is now selling for $59.99 at MidwayUSA and there is a rebate available from RCBS.
