The ruger 1 in 450 ak I've been paining over. You know Bass, the one you was wondering if I was ever going to fire:mrgreen: Well she's been getting some firing. After the rechambering , the fire lapping,the throat lengthening,the neck lengthening. God only knows what its called now. I call it seven pounds of certain death at both ends. When the LBT LFN is all dressed it comes out at just under 400 grains,a BC of 334 and 2400 fps. Man does she toss a fella around. A tad over 1/2 moa is where she sits now. Man some moose is goin to get his cage rattled this year. Thats what I wanted. A light cast shooter that would move a bullet out from 0-250 yds with virtually no thought of drop,just snap and go. Did I mention it really rattles your cage. 73.5 grains of 4895 has quite the dull roar. She kissed my head once, then I realized I gotta pull her in REAL tight to my neck as I can get er. Man I wondered if this one was ever goin to fly, but fly she does

...............HA! Great fun ain't it? After I had a MAS36 converted to 45-70 I began a regemine of testing. Starting with the lightest boolits I had (Lyman 300gr) and shooting them faster until accuracy failed or leading began. Lemme tell you for sure it became NO fun with 400gr slugs at 2200 fps, 450's at 2100 fps and 500gr slugs at ~2,000.

I just got so blamed tired of having the left side of the stock and action covered in slobber I figured I'd found all I needed to know :-)

I picked up a partial box of Hornady 500 gn SP many years ago and had to try them in my Siamese Mauser... well I still have a partial box left.

I'll stick with my slow heavy cast boolits any day.

Twenty some odd years ago I was having FUN, shooting 500 grain Lymans in my Siamese. Even took them turkey hunting one spring.
The bird didn't know the difference but the tree behind the turkey and I sure as heck knew it.
The 445 grain Lymans seemed to be more civilized.

You guys remind me of an ad I once saw for a 45-70 10in. Contender barrel, the ad read "fired once and dropped once"

Ah hell no. I quick fast like a bunny loaded up 20 more last night after typing you guys. The landscaper I got in couple years back told me the best way to dry out the back of my property was to get rid of all the poplar/aspen trees so the sun could dry it. I'm blowin em over one by one. The lott comes out for the ones that think they got staying power,,HAH

Buckshot;
I found that a 500gr at 1900fps or a 405gr at 2100fps does lead to headaches after 20-30 of them in a Handi.
I was using 60gr WC 844, that is, a case full.
I do like a 320gr with 40gr 4198, gives 1800+fps and recoil is not bad.

Sounds like water buffalo and Grizzlys need to go into
hiding whwn you are out int the field.

When a load gives you headaches, it is trying to tell you something[smilie=1: . As one who has shot as many as 2000 full loads in .375 H&H Magnum off a bench (one summer) I do UNDERSTAND recoil. You would think that I have learned, but NO! Here I am, as soon as the weather breaks, going to be working with my Ruger #3 in 45/70 (6 lbs or so).

However, as one who probably doesn't need many more "hits to the head" (ask anyone who knows me) I'll be doing most of my work at reasonable velocities. Reasonable velocities could be defined as more the "Trapdoor" variety than the ".458 Magnum" variety.[smilie=1:
