I was at Walmart last night about 10:30 p.m. or so, and asked about getting some sluggers for this weekend's deer season. The lady told me that they aren't allowed to sell ammo after 10 p.m. and that it has been a policy for the company for a long time as far as she knew. Has anybody else even heard of this?

I think its a staffing thing more than anything. Out here there's lots on the shelf too ,100 packs of game loads and steel anyway. Never looked much at the rest.

Never heard of it, then again I normally don't go into a walmart that late.

Must be a regional thing. Here one can buy ammo all hours of the day.

That is what I thought too, heck I think I have bought it in the evening in the past. I sure wasn't allowed to last night in Ontario, OH.

IIRC my local china-mart has a sign on the ammo cabinet that says no sales between 10:00pm and 6:00am.

Walfarts around me are this way. It is a staffing issue. The keys get put away when the Sporting Goods dept. staff go home. I've been lucking before, finding the night crew stocking the ammo cabinet or a firearms friendly manager walking by and offering to go back and get the keys.

I went to Wal-Mart to pick up some ammunition for a trap shoot. I picked up 5 of their 100-round boxes of 12 gauge shells setting on the end cap. As an afterthought, I decided to get four boxes of 20 gauge as well, so I asked the guy behind the counter for them.

"All right, but I will have to ring them up back here or walk you to the checkers up front if you get these."

"So I'm okay going up front with just the 500 12 gauge shells, just not the 20 gauge?"

"Yep."

"Why is that?"

"Because the 20 gauge shells came from behind the counter. We keep all the dangerous shells locked up out of reach of the public."

"Okay...well then..."

I was in wallmart one nught and the pistils were gone, I ask the guy if they had quit selling them , and he said no they would be back the next day. I t seems like that was some kind of holliday, so I don't know if they put them up every night or what.

You folks are lucky. I went into my local China Mart for a can of GUN oil and was told they do not carry anything related to dangerous guns.

I believe I have seen signs at at least one of our local WMs indicating no ammo sales between 10:00pm and 7:00am, but I am also pretty sure I have purchased even pistol ammo after 10:00pm. I believe it is a local store manager decision, just like carrying reloading components.

Some of the problems may well stem from the store manager's decision on the issue.

When up north there I live in Danville... as of 2 years ago they still have the basics in ammo longguns (no nasty handhelds) and supplies. Maybe has changed there also.

Our local Wally World doesn't sell ammo after 10 pm either,Buying handgun ammo during the day is aggrevating enuff. The last time I purchased a couple boxes of 9mm, the lady rings me up and says, " I need to see your I.D.,,Is this ammunition for a handgun?",, I answered"No ma'am,, fishing rod." LOL

I would imagine it has as much to do with your state than Wal-Mart. I have bought Ammo in the late evening and very early morning in the Wal-Mart in West Plains , Mo.

The WalMart in Sweetwater, Tx. even has reloading supplies. The man there told me it was up to the local managers to carry it or not.

I envy you when wally world first opened in Mo they had reloading supplies they havent had any in 25 years now.
But back to the OP I know in ILL you have to have a FOID card etcetra and they only train certain people? who knows when it comes to Wal_Mart its what ever burr the store manager has IMO

not sure about wallys , but we were at fleet farm on the way up hunting and my brother picks up some pistol ammo , keep in mid all rifle ammo shot gun shells high cap magazines . and ar15 parts are on the sales floor for people to take to the front register , and that they sell ak's ar's rifles, shotguns , and handguns of all types and sizes

but the handgun ammo behind the counter they check your id , then bag it with a slip and staple the bag shut then you may take it up front to purchase it

I know that for at least the last 10-12 years that the Walmarts around here close ammo sales between 10pm and 6am.

Always wanted to go to W/M at like 3AM and buy the following items:
Ski mask
Latex gloves
Duct tape
Large knife
Shovel
Rope
Gas can
Shotgun shells

Wonder if that'd raise any eyebrows?

At 3AM you would probably have to scan the items yourself as most of the cashiers are not working then. Also you put your bills lnto a slot which goes to a safe. 0 chance of a robbery as no cash is available

Last week I bought some 22 mag and at the sports counter, at check out I was asked if this was for pistol ammo. Now these were really being use in a rifle but I do have a 22 mag pistol, I said no but ask what makes the difference, answer was that they had to walk pistol ammo out the door not rifle. So how honest do they think people really are. I have rifles in most of my pistol calabers. Now I don't care if they want to walk me out and carry my stuff , It just makes no sence to me.
Thanks Nick

I suppose it would depend on what the cashier looked like as to what my answer would be. lol

I never buy handgun ammo at Walmart. Actually I never buy pre rolled ammo. I used to buy .22 ammo but have a stash of it now and will not pay the going rate for it. Before last election I bought the federal bulk packs for $7.97. Now they are $19!

We have no local gun shops or hardware stores that sell ammo or components anymore. Nobody in my county sold reloading tools or supplies(except shotgun) ever ceptin for used stuff that got traded in at the gun/pawn shop that is also gone.

I do believe the internet put life back into the shooting world!

Both of the Wal-Marts that I use here have taken out their self operated check-outs. People just simply didn't use them.

Sounds like someone is just lazy. If there is no one on duty in sporting goods with keys, there is always some kind of manager they can summon to take care of you.

Probably because they can see you don’t have a rifle with you. People in the store don’t make the rules. They have to follow them. Some in risk management probably imagines a robber might come in, buy ammo, load a handgun he brought in with him, and rob the store. For all we know it may have happened, sometime, somewhere.

"All the dangerous stuff" Its about the same at my wally-word. They have a chain across the end of the counter to stop ppl from getting behind the counter. Now they have about 5 foot of cleaning and gun stuff. 2 foot of it is past the chain line. I needed a bag of cleaning patch that just happened to be over the chain line. The guy started giving me flack for reaching over. Told him dont stock to supply's over that far then. Again reached a foot over the line grabbed the patches. "sir you cant do that". with patches in hand told him to !! !!!! !!! !!!! and put'em in the cart and continued shopping.

I wonder if any of that has to do with shoplifting prevention.

Chinese Crappola Mart in California a few years back got caught not properly filling out the required Socialist paper work on firearm sales and lost their license to sell. Turned out that it was nothing but very poorly trained sales people and not any intent to decieve or cricumvent the law. They didn't appeal and still sell no guns.

LA city has a law that requires fingerprints to purchase ammo, not the county just the city. I can go to say my local Big 5 (in LA County) and buy shot gun shells etc with no problem but they do walk it to the register. Buy the same thing in the next town over (within LA city) and they want finger prints to buy it.

All the more reason to roll your own, and pick up components while you are on vacation.

That is usually regulated by statute.
