I loaded some .430-240-2Rs in some .44 Special cases. They were lubed with alox. When I got done, I spun them all in a universal chuck and wiped them with a rag with a little light oil on it to cut the lube and wipe it off the noses. One time I picked up the rag and unknowingly used the dry end of the rag. The boolit turned shiney, but dark gray. The rest that were done with the oily end of the rag were all shiney silver. How come the one that got hit with the dry part of the rag turned dark like that?

It's not as smooth of a finish, so it reflects less light.

You imbedded the lube into the pores of the boolit. Some gun show reloads do this....I think the vendor tumbles the ammo AFTER assembly. I've accidentally done it to pistol ammo.

I believe the thin coating of oil is acting much like a coat of wax. It not only reflects the light but it also inhibits the surface of the lead from oxidizing.

Jim,
what carry load are you using for that 44?
