I was looking at the Ruger M77 Hawkeye Alaskan and the 416 Ruger cartridge and it looked intriguing.

Any thoughts on the New Ruger 416 cartridge? Or even the Ruger 375?

I've got one in the .375, it's a terrific rifle, and maybe even a better cartridge, it feeds like butter, shoots like a varmint rifle and has been easy to develop loads for.

Greetings

I have the Alaskan bolt action in 375, and a 416 in a #1. The 375 shoots flatter, but the 416 shoots the bigger slug.

Bought a 350 grain mold for the 416 because the cost of jacketed bullets are rather high. The 375 bullets are not cheap either. I load my own because of the cost of factory ammo.

Recently, I have been shooting the #1 with it's heavy 24" barrel it weighs nine pounds. These rounds were designed for a 20" barrel, but work much better with a longer barrel. My 416 will easily shoot minute of elephant head at 100 yards without a rest using iron sights.

The Alaskan 375 is a bit light at 7.5 to 8 pounds. I put a couple of pounds of lead in the buttstock, so it now weighs close to ten pounds without scope. Killed an estimated 600 pound hog with the 375 with 270 grain Hornady load from the factory.

I like both rounds and rifles for different reasons. The 375 bolt action provides an easy follow up shot if needed. On the other hand, the 416 does not need a follow up shot if the bullet was placed right to begin with.

Brass cases for these rounds cost about a dollar each, but very satifying when friends and relatives beg to shoot them. Everyone was impressed with both guns.

The stainless #1 is no longer in the factory line, so if you want one better get one quick while you can find them.
