I just bought a Savage 220, Great gun, however the shells that are recomended are almost $3.00 each. Lee sells a 20 gauge slug mold that uses a standard wad, they claim it is as accurate as a factory sabot in rifled barrels. Have any of you folks ever used them, and if so how did they shoot. I'm needing some feedback please. Thanks, Stu

I use the 7/8 lee mold in a 12 gauge. I had to do a lot of experimenting to get good results but did eventually.

I tried 3 different wads and hulls before getting the results. To the best of my memory I had roughly 3 inch groups at 100 yards.

I use a Mossburg 500 c with a rifled barrel.

Lyman makes a 20 gauge mold. I don't think Lee does. At least I have never seen one.

The Mythical Lee 20gauge slug mold...I've been looking for one for over 10 years. I think they are available as a custom mold direct from them for the same cost as Lyman's 350gr 20gr Sabot mold.

I bought a Lyman.

I thought the 1 oz was 12 gauge and the 7/8 oz was 20 gauge?

I need your help!
I just can't make a slug shoot. I have a Hastings rifled barrel on my 870 and only factory slugs work. My loads are spray and pray! :bigsmyl2:

44man Try hs-6 with grey win aa wads. The load was 38.6grains if I remember correctly Double check the charge as I am doing this by memory

Take a look at the three pictures to the left. I'll double check later but what I believe I used was

BPI 3 inch hull
AA12 wad
7/8 lee slug

Trim the petals on the wad to where it comes up just above the starting point of the ogive on the slug.

Prime and charge the hull
Hand seat a wad and slug in the hull
Trim the hull so that the slug is just below the top of the hull
Do not crimp

I was worried about jamming when cycling but they work fine

I got to my records and it looks like 38.2 gr of HS6. I was able to keep 3 on a paper plate offhand at 75 yards. Cheap Remington rifled barrel.

Question #1 Are you loading 12ga. or 20ga. hulls?
Lee only shows 12ga. slug molds.
Lyman has 12 and 20.
I like Bruce Drake have waited for Lee's 20ga, non existant mold , and I also bought the Lyman.
Be prepared to experiment with hulls, wads, and powders.
2 sources you may want to look at might be: Ballistics Products website, and Shotgunworld.com.
Both have slug info.
Good luck.

Les.

Not all barrels/brands have the same twist rate. Mossberg was first with the fully rifled barrel and BRI sabots. Remington came along dead last, with a different twist. Only Rem ammo worked in Rem. barrels. The 12ga Lee key drive slug averages 7" @ 100 for me using a Mossberg cantilever scoped barrel. The wad i used has been discontinuded now. What hurts the average is a flyer now and then when a petal of the wad breaks off on leaving the barrel. Hits about 18" from POA. A real average killer. Casings that have been fireformed to the chamber, when reloaded, were more accurate than once fired. http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n420/joe1944usa/th_CastBullets_20090207_002.jpg (http://s338.photobucket.com/albums/n420/joe1944usa/?action=view&current=CastBullets_20090207_002.jpg) http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n420/joe1944usa/th_Lee12gaSlug.jpg (http://s338.photobucket.com/albums/n420/joe1944usa/?action=view&current=Lee12gaSlug.jpg)

Lee doesn't make a 20ga slug.

My problem has always been wad destruction. Petals shear off in the bore from the slug pressure. I pick up nasty looking wads.
