Social Security is in trouble and it would be amazingly simple to fix. I had my social security briefing on Friday. I was told if I commit a felony I'd lose my benefits. I already knew that as I have a friend in the pen and although he kept his Air Force retirement and his Boeing retirement,he lost social seurity benefits. I could fully understand that if he was in a federal pen being supported by the federal government. He is not,he is in a state institution. I did ask the briefer about that and was given a very short--it's the law and that's it. Was afraid to say more as she might have had me locked up for questioning her. Well folks all we have to do is trump up some bogus charges on older folks so that they get supported by the state and it frees up federal money(social security). We would target those that draw the largest benefits. Hey,I was enlisted, this would target the officers---sorry Sundog and Anthony B(and others)--but heck I'm sure you don't mind my volunteering you as you may have volunteered me for some great deals along the way. My friend in the pen was officer--he needs company too. This would be such a sound way of making a profit for social security,I think I'll start a bank and utilize this principle. You put your money in my bank---your money---I'll have a plan where you don't have a choice, you have to deposit it there and if you even get a traffic ticket, you can't withdraw your own money. Certainly crimes more serious than traffic tickets would void your eligibility to withdraw your money. This plan would be twofold. It would reduce crime and make the streets and highways safer. I would be president of a very lucrative, successfully ran bank. Those eligible to withdraw any of their own money would get very nice dividends and ofcourse my salary would reflect the ingenious method of doing business. Heck yea,it might have been their money, but they weren't wearing their seatbelt,so no withdrawl.

............Carpetman, I don't suppose your post was primarily about SS, but the SS we have today is a warped beyond recognition image of what it was supposed to be. Society has changed radicly in it's mores and beliefs as has the family institution. So has SS been twisted and turned into a totally unrecognizable form of what it once was.
I have a tendancy to agree with the situation where if one is incarcerated at public expense, that their SS would be curtailed during their 'stay'. If there were dependents left behind I would be inclined to have the payments diverted to them, if they had no other support.

This is much easier said than done, but try and find legit "other income" that is not considered wages, interest, or capital gains. This kind of money is not taxed by SS. If you are really interested, send me an email. ... felix

Buckshot---I fully agree with you that if a person is incarcerated at public expense------if that public was FEDERAL expense then their money should be shut off. Because the Fed would be in effect giving back that persons money. But if it's the state footing the bill, why should the FED(social security)have claim on that money? They are getting a free ride out of the deal in my books. In the situation I mentioned, the incarcerated does have dependent. How much other income they have or don't have, has nothing to do with the fact the incarcerated did pay into social security and earned it and it is his money. If they are incarcerated because they ripped off the Fed I could see stoppage----be a case of the Fed getting their money back. The case I mentioned has no connection to federal funds. BTW,the lawmakers that set this up don't pay into social security, they have their own much better system. Wonder if their retirement stops if they get incarcerated?

If our elected thieves hadn't stole it, lent it to themselves at illegal rates, there wouldn't be a problem!

Well I just read something the other day about a system reaching a point of no return where there are more people taking than giving, and they constitute a voting bloc that just votes itself more entitlemants without any regard for where the $$ come from.
we are close to that nowI think.
one idea I think that has merit is to save money enough to go on strike one year out of 7, sabbatical like college profs get, and we all just take ours the same year.
another idea is for the hard working folk to all move to one state, and leave the other states with the freeloaders.
putting old people in prison might have some upsides, with their years of experience they are bound to be more carefull workers, thus the license plates will be much nicer :-)
plus they won't be cluttering up the roads putting along at 40mph......viagra sales would slump tho...ditto for rogain.

We'd actually be doing them a favor; free medical insurance and perscriptions. Unfortunately, I'm one of those who will never get Social Security; I don't have enough time in because I was on Civil Service, and even if I did have enough time, they have some kind of rule that reduces the SS amount to almost nothing. I'm not complaining, I know lots of people that are worse off.

Gents: the comment re:Veral S. fits right in with news brought in today's fishwrapper... Sitting member of Idaho House, one PHil Hart, has started 'making payments" on back taxes, penalties, and interest accumulated over the 7 years duration of his"refusal to pay personal income tax".. the leg.district he rep's is less than 100 Miles from Verals place..Guess he had better "connections"or legal services than Veral had...!!!... as always here, news like this never appears during the campaigns!!
