I've been lurking all day reading everything I can!
I never though of casting my own bullets until only a few weeks ago. A friend offered me a deal I couldn't refuse on a S&W 10-5 PPC custom job in .38 special, came with a Dillon progressive press, 3k once fired brass, 1000 WC and 500SWC. For $400 I think it was worth it! Since I'm at home and off work for the next couple months (broken back in work accident) I tend to sit at the reloading bench and work the press and as a consequence rapidly started running out of bullets. That was when the bug bit me! So now I have the lee precision pot and a lee 6 cavity mold for SWC tumble lube type. My first casting attempt produced a lot of bullets with wrinkles and bad bases, but from my reading here I see my problem was my mold wasn't cleaned, hot enough, sprue too cold, lead too cool, etc etc.
So thanks to all of you for the informative reading here at this forum, I hope to eventually know enough to contribute some day!
And collecting lead is a pain in the a$$ when you cant bend over or pick up more than 5 lbs at a time!

welcome aboard , it is addictive

you may see if you can buy or trade for lead with a member here if it comes in a medium flat rate box and you can get the post man to get it to your porch , they will likely have it all in nice usable ingots that you never need to lift more than one at a time.

Welcome, and take care of that back. Look over in the group buy threads for some wonderfully crafted custom molds (might want to stick to aluminum molds to reduce stress on back)

Pull up a chair and sit awhile, chime in with any questions you might have, hope you are well and back to work soon.

38 special PPC revolvers are a ton of fun, aren't they? I have the Lee 6 cavity 148 grain WC mold. I just cast a bunch of the rascals with wheel weight alloy and then tumble lube them (no sizing necessary). A light load of Bullseye, Clays, 231 or Red Dot and off to the range once again to enjoy myself.

Well i got out and did a little casting this morning since it warmed up a bit outside today (-5C) Now that the mold is clean and I got the lead hotter I had much better luck, they still arent perfect but better than my first try where half were so badly wrinkled they were rejects.

194 keepers and 9 rejects (bad bases)
Now I have an excuse to hit the range tomorrow!

Yep another goner. I'm fairly new here myself, but find this lot of folks to be right kindly.
