Yep, but I would also spend some on a nice piece of land with my own range. I think a 1,000 yard range would suffice. Oh and you might as well change the name of the swapping and selling section to the "Love Life buys everything" section.

They say 70% of lottery winners don't have much to show for it in just a few years.

You'd be better off taking that $1M and figuring out a way to live within the means that amount of money will afford you. It could give you a great amount of freedom, especially if coupled with a career and retirement plan.

Buying everything in sight would deplete it fairly quick. Buy yourself a little something nice and then do the wise thing with the money.

Twenty seven or so years ago I worked for a commercial fisherman, that had 12 acres they wanted to build a shopping center on. he sold it for 1.7 million.
I asked him if he was going to quit commercial fishing, he said nope, but I might be a little better class of fisherman. lol

Pay off debt.

Invest $50,000 into moving my business to its own building and getting some equipment I need.

Let the rest sit and focus efforts on my business.

Since I'm dreaming anyway, I might as well NOT let reality in. I'd buy me a nice hilly patch of timber in the middle of nowhere and go out the back door to test my loads and go to the can if I so desired............. Big long lane up to the house from an oiled road. Don't want the dust from a gravel road getting on my reloading stuff.

Have often given this some thought what if i would win the lottery? If a person has alllll that money to do with what ever they want will it bring back my bad back? no would it bring me good health? no would it bring back my loved ones who have passed on? no. About all that much money would do is make you a "observer" of life no longer a participant of "life" no more problems to surmount to make you a better person just go buy what you want. No thank you give me friends a roof over my head that's mine the food i need and the wife i love i have won this lottery! steve k

A million dollars is not a huge amount of money anymore. If not managed well it would not last long. As I rapidly approach retirement, I am focused on asset protection. This is what I would do.
I'd place the million in a fixed index annuity. It would draw 7% interest a year. If you draw only the interest from the account, starting after the first year, you would have an annual return of $70,000 a year and never touch the original million......a lifetime of income.......to do just what fishhawk suggests. It would give you the freedom to devote more time to family.

It would never happen as I never buy lottery tickets. But that is not the question.

If I had a million bucks? Invest the total amount in the safest investments and only spend a portion of the interest I would receive and a portion of that would go to charity. Other than that I would continue to live as I do now as I am content.

If I had won a million dollars, I would buy some land somewhere to build my retirement house and put aside the money to build the house.

With what was left, buy the local police dept some shields, designed to protect the whole body, for their SWAT team (we lost a good guy here a few years ago). Give some to the local sheriff dept. and go to the angel tree at the club(yes, I play golf!!) and pull off all the pieces of paper from the kids wish list. Then buy some more toys for the Marines "toys for tots", then some more toys for the military families, then food for the food bank.

I would splurge on a new RCBS 20 lb pot or one of the Magmas 40 lb pots.

Then the rest, I would invest.

Now, if I won a big powerball, would do things a bit differently. I would start a charitable trust, put half in and travel the country to help others out, be it an individual(college funds, big on education here), or maybe a town (swimming pool, tornado sirens, things like that). Probably one of the first things would be donate to the local school and build a performing arts center. Then travel the country. Probably buy an airplane to help, but use some of my other half of the winnings for the plane. Then do the traveling bit. Would have to be careful as to who would get anything . Pretty tight screening process. Oh, donate to my Alma Matters' for scholarships too.

This would be my remainder lifes work.

DEFINATELY! You have the right idea. 70K is more than I make right now, so it would be a nice bump in income. I would take an early retirement from my job (a little more monthly income to boot), and do some things I want to do. Maybe start a small business, etc. -- But I would not touch the original 1M.

We don't have a lot of money but have through the years tried to live modestly and save a little bit when we could. I did what a lot of people do and invested some money in a CD, and some stock type investments. During the economic melt down over the past few years I watched in horror as our investments took a dive into the sewer as the bottom fell out. Result was some lost forever, and most starting below where we started. I then see what happens on "Wall Street" and think the whole financial system is probably corrupt and for sure very greedy. The lust for money turns into a never ending circle of wanting more. I couldn't tell you what a secure investment is here on this side of eternity, but I think the wisest way to spend a good portion of it is along the lines of missionary5155's post. Help others and you lay up treasures in heaven where moth and rust (read dishonest bankers, etc) does not eat it away. In addition to that I took what was left of the "investment" and purchased a small 80 acre track where I can put "boots on the ground" and enjoy it.

If I had a million dollars (after taxes of course), the first thing I would do is pay off my house and be totally out of debt. That would build stability and add a little insurance in case of a downturn in my health or employment situation.

Next, I would put approximately $600,000 into an annuity (as has already been suggested). This would also add a little extra security to the income situation.

There would be a considerable amount given to charity and the family would end up with 3 new, reliable vehicles. Our current vehicles all have over 140,000 miles on them. I want my family members to be safe and have reliable transportation.

Anything left over would go for a couple new toys so we could further enjoy this new found freedom.

Also, money is an inanimate object, just like a firearm - it's neither good nor evil. That label belongs to the human holding it.

I've said it before, but I would set up a huge gun range and invite my friends and everyone on this forum to come and shoot with me. In terms of firearms, I have most of what I want, but could use a few more. I have a nephew that is searching for a job with his new biology degree. He could run my range for me.

There would be a big fire pit that we could sit around in the evenings and share stories. Free food and drinks as long as the money lasts.

Hey, if I'm going to dream, I will dream BIG!

Pay off my house, pay off wife's student loans and invest. Probably spend a little on a few nice to haves for wife and myself. A nice to have would be a Pinzgauer truck or an older Lotus open wheel race car (like a type 51). Having said that, I won't fall into a million because I have no rich relatives to will me money and I never play (waste money) on the lotto so I'll never win that.

If I had a million and no debt, other than booking a number of trips both hunting and pleasure for the wife and myself, the first would be a double rifle. Maybe two of them! One in 45-70, and the other in one of the Brit Rimmed Cals. Had a 45-70 in my hands last year at the SCI convention in Reno that I just about drooled over. It to me, was about the quality of a size 40 virgin breast. It was Belg. made, had a minimum of engraving and a price tag of $24,000.00 and change. It came up to the shoulder like my 20g. side by side Browning. I hated to put it down. There were other doubles in various cals that I handled with price tags up into the 40K bracket, but that 45-70 was something special. Have always wanted a double, been fortunate enough to shoot a couple, and know that I will never be able to afford one! But that is what dreams are made of I guess.

1,000,000 after taxes

I'd take $50,000 and blow it on anything I wanted!

The rest I'd look at investing or using it to make more capital. Then live off of the returns on that capital.

may not be extravagant but it would suffice, and I'd be set for life, as would my kids.

We'd put 10% in the "charity checkbook" and help out a few causes we approve of(no United Way for us !!). Buy up a few more acres. Maybe I could even pay extra and go to the head of the line for some Corbin swaging dies. Restore the 1968 Dart. Buy a new John Deere to make Pop mad - he's an old International guy ! Then go back to reloading and shooting, same as now.

I'd prob still scrounge, thats half the fun.

With a mil:

Pay off my remaining debt. (not much left)
Buy some hunting land in PA or NH
build my own place on the land (as self sufficient as possible) I'm a builder by trade, it'll be easy

Have my personal range
Plenty of land for the kids to ride quads on, and raise hell
Buy a duece ( always wanted one)

Buy rental properties with the rest. (steady monthly income with little work to pay back)

Next, I'd call my investor and tell him the money market account was getting a major upgrade.

After that, I'd resume scrounging lead, casting boolits, and buying powder one jug at a time.

Its nice to dream sometimes.....If I won a million no one would know other than my wife and the goverment. There wouldnt be much change in our daily lives other than the trucks being paid off, moving into a decent house, and a couple new Freedom Arms revolvers.

A million isnt really all that much but having it and knowing its there sure would make going to work a little more enjoyable everyday. I know that sounds odd but I really do like what I do, but will never get rich in my chosen profession and that always wears on a guy.

First and most important is I would pump a lot more into the 2 college funds for the kids. Then, assuming I didn't just move, I would buy this house from my BIL and then have it fixed up right. Maybe add a second story on it so we wold have some room, the place it really too small.

I've been following this thread for several days and really like the responses of most. I've also thought about how I would react although it will never happen since I don't gamble(buy lottery tickets).

If I had a million dollars in hand, I think I would invest half for the balance of our retirement. I would then set up a trust to take care of the "estate" after we passed. The trust might just include the half for retirement. I'm already 6 years into retirement so not a lot would be needed. Maybe then pay off both our sons debts and then equalize by giving the one who had the least debt the difference in cash. The rest would be allocated to charity, to be given as needs are seen. Some would be local, some would go to reputable national organizations. Someone posted veterans organizations as being a good choice. If one checked out as using most donations to benefit veterans, it would get some. I also try to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

I almost forgot. I would replace my 14 year old pickup.
