Anybody out there tried a 180 gr. Hornady XTP (.357) in a 35 Rem rifle? Do you mind sharing some info? I can't find any info 'cept for 158 gr or 200 gr and I don't know whether to interpolate or not.:?:

Well, a pistol bullet from a rifle will be violently expansive if you launch it at maximum rifle speed. On larger game, that could be a real mistake. That particular bullet may be a bit tougher than other pistol bullets, so a velocity of roughly 10% above what it gets from a revolver might still be usable.

Begin your testing with one of the faster powders shown for a 200-gr bullet. The Start load for that bullet may put you close to the speed you want.

I just looked in my Hornady #8 and find that they do list data for a 180-gr bullet in the 35 Rem - in the book's handgun section. The bullet is not their XTP, so results might be different. But 28-29 grains of RL-7 gave them 1900 fps or so from a15" barrel. That's the speed that the XTP is designed for.

Just a thought perhaps a 180 gr xtp from a 35 remington rifle would make the xtp overexpand or come apart at the velocties capeable in the 35 rem ?
I do have some data for the 35 rem but not from hornday 180 gr xtp but with the sierra 180 gr fpj pistol bullet and in general 170/180 gr pistol bullets from the sierra manual and hodgen reloading manual shot from a contender with a 14 inch barrel.

Normally in the box of XTP bullets there will be a paper with the velocity the bullet is designed for.

Any Speer manual will give 180 gr loads for the 35 Remington rifle. They're 180 is longer so, you won't be able to use they're OAL but, it will give you a idea of what powders you can use and max pressures.

Don't be too cavalier about switching load data for bullets of different designs, even if the same weight. Pressures can vary as much as 10,000 psi with a different bullet and no other changes. Not always, but it CAN. That's one of the main reasons why "book" data varies so much, you know.

In general, swaping pistol bullets for rifle bullets will give lower pressures. The two main reasons are,

1. The bullets, being shorter, will be loaded out farther, increasing case capacity.

2. The bullet will be made of softer core and thinner and possibly softer jacket temper, reducing the pressure it takes to conform to the groove dia and rifling.

A longer bearing length will increase pressure a little but, in general not enough to over come the reducing factors.
