Found a neat rifle....

Pawn shopping yesterday and I found a neat rifle. I have been looking for some more hunting rifles lately. For years I have been more focused on Black rifles and now I am starting to do some more hunting and decided I needed a few extra rifles.

I found a Ted Williams M53....It's essentially a Winchester M70 push feed in .30-06. Gun is in excellent condition, apparently never had a scope on it. I bought it for $200, tax and all. I scrounged the parts bin at the gunsmiths and came up with a Redfield one piece mount for it for $5 and I have a set of rings in my own junk drawer. Going to put an old Redfield 3x9 on it and see what it will do.

I have a similar rifle, a Winchester M-670 in 30-06 (push feed/blind mag). It shoots very well with both j-words and castings. If it gets scratched up a little while hunting, I won't be heartbroken. "The 30-06 is never a mistake." (Was that Townsend Whelen's statement?)

This one actually has a hinged floorplate though it is a little different than the usual M70 unit. I have not one but two m70 stocks at the house that I may put this in if it fits. I have a featherweight stock and a "classic" walnut stock off of late model M70's. The wood on this one is pretty plain and the M70 stocks would make it look more like a "real" m70. We'll see.

Pretty tough to pass up a really nice rifle for $200. Especially these days when everything that shoots seems to cost double what it did just two years ago.

My M-670 is just a good working rifle that will make venison and punch paper for me without fanfare. It dotes on both Nosler BalTip 165's and on Lee 312-185 sized at .311" to match its throat.

Funnily enough I bought a nice push feed Winny recently in 22/250. It came with a Leupold M8 6x, which will end up on anpther rifle, my 22Hortnet has a mediocre Miroku 6x on it. I also have a 3-9 Redfield which will ride atop the Winchester.

In 1974 I bought a 308 670 from a fellow in the CBA. He used the rifle for matches and had glassed bedded and free floated the gun. He had shot over 10,000 rouds of cast throught the gun after he bought it new. That was the most accurate hunting rifle I ever owned and it would regularly put 5 jacketed bullets into under 3/4" at 100 yards. Being young and foolish I shot the gun with increasingly hot loads of J bullets until I got it good and copper fouled and then I traded it off. That was another one I should have kept. The 670's hit the dealers a couple of years ago and I bought one each for a friend and his boy. They were from a prison down south and were rough on the outside and new on the inside and were also good shooters. The Ted Williams 53 was about 1/2 way between a real M70 and a 670 and I think they were offered one time as a 770???

I have a Winchester 770 in .222 Rem that I bought new around 1970. Plain walnut stock, push feed, blind magazine, not highly polished, almost a matte finish. It is a long action with a spacer in the mag well. I can't imagine ever parting with it because it is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned.

I dont' think there is alot of difference between the 770 and a true model 70 and even less so in this case since this gun has the hinged floorplate that the 770 does not have. The bolt is slightly different but not in function- it has the anti bind rib and three position safety- the tail of the bolt is different though. That's about it. Over the weekend I will try it in one of my other M70 stocks and see what I get.

My M-670 is just a good, working-class-dog kinda deer gun. Kinda like my Rem 788's.......unpretentious, accurate, reliable.

It really is a nice little rifle. I didn't get to shoot it this weekend as we had 60 mph winds on Saturday and I also "acquired" several other weapons to play with out of the blue.....but that's for another thread.

I didn't even get a chance to change out the stocks and see if that will work or not. I was messing with some other guns and didn't get around to it. I THINK I have a little time to myself this week though and should be able to get it cleaned, scope mounted and maybe dropped in one of the "new" stocks. Maybe by the weekend I'll get to shoot it.

Dep. Al... "The 30-06 Is Never A Mistake" is the title of an article by Townsend Whelen in the December 1947 issue of The American Rifleman. During 1947, AR ran a series of articles on various cartridger and the Whelen article on the 30-06 was the last in the series.

Mine has no black foreend and the stock is checkered vs. that big Fleur De Lis pattern but otherwise that's it. Like I said, it's just an M70 in a plainer stock with a fold down rear sight. I have all of $225 in mine and that includes, rifle, scope, mount, rings and sling. Not a bad rig and it shoots pretty well too.

Any of you all looking on these sites for guns, if you find a 270 bolt with excellent barrel/action, please let me know. Cosmetics mean nothing. ... felix

Felix, if you find a .270, I have at least 5000 Hornady gas checks, RCBS dies, Lee Collet dies, at least on RCBS mold, and mucho brass in that caliber. And no rifle. Thank goodness for EBAY...

Best thing for you to do 270 wise is find a driving partner or three ,saddle up & come to NCBS '0x, then you can carry back with you my Husqvarna Hi-Power, early Post-WWII,sans S/H &transfer fees ,and take advantage of face/face haggling, will also bring one ea.in 30/06 and 220 swift,so the 270 can have companionship on trip to new home..All Hi-Powers, FN mauser action,according to my references...See you there :roll: Onceabull

hI Lawyerman. I have one of those that I have been wondering about what stock fits it along the M70 lines. It is a M-70 made for Sears after all. I had a M50 made by FN a long time ago. my M53 shoots great but would be interested in a stock for mine.
