Anyone here ever convert a Marlin 336 in 30-30 to .356? Besides the barrel, what else is involved?

Yes, I had Mr. Occumpaugh rebore and rechamber my Marlin 336 W MG from 30-30 WCF to 356 W. I also had the barrel shortened to 17 1/2" and the magazine tube shortened to an inch past the forend. The front sight and the dovetail block mag tube hanger were reset. 1/15" twist.

After taking a couple of 120 pound bucks with the 208 grain RCBS mould in 35 using Varget I've switched over to the 180 Speer FP over a a start Speer load of IMR 4895. The first load runs about 1950 fps, the second about 2100 fps. For my hunting those are perfect and neither shows pressure signs. The conversion will feed and eject both 356 W and 358 W cases perfectly.

Any changes to the feed mechanism?

I was asking a very similar question on gunsmithing T&T section. Precious little seems to be known.

NONE, except to shorten the magazine spring and JES did that.

Scratching the itch is OK but where are you going to get a barrel job for $250. Latest I ahve seen is about $500 for barrel and smithing.

Rebore and rechamber $250.00 plus shipping.

Or you can rechamber a 35 rem to 358win. Case head dia is close enough you don't need to do anything else.

Only problem is I dont have a 35 Rem. Jut a 30-30 or a 45-70. Be a bit tricky to rebore a 45-70.

I had Jess Ocumpaugh rebore my Marlin 336W to .375 Winchester last year and couldn't be happier. He had it back to me in 6 days and the work is excellent. I very highly recommend him.

Here is a link to his website: http://www.35caliber.com/2.html

Hope this helps.

I have two but am trying to get a cheap 30-30 and do a rebore.

Might do one each way and see which I prefer and give the other to one of my boys.

Everyone keeps mentioning JES. I guess he used to do it, when I called him and talked with him this past spring he said "NOPE!"

What did you ask him to do that he said "no" to doing? It would be intresting to know in case I should ask for some of the same.

I'd be interested, too, since I just had my .375 Winchester rebore done last year. Jesse is a very friendly guy and does outstanding work. I've seen a couple of other rifles he's done and they were all done right.

Hope this helps.

Fred

PS: Jesse and his brother are both about 6'6" tall.........

I called him about doing 450 marlin to 50 alaskan. He won't or can't do that. I don't have a drawing of 50 Ak or 450 marlin so I asked. Hope he still does 356win.

Yeah, I built one last year. I had an 18" 357 carbine micro groove barrel take off from a model 94 I built into a 256 Win mag. All I did was re-chamber, match the mag tube, and set the head space. I shoot the RCBS 35-200 in it. Awesome shooting rifle.

You're reading something into my post that wasn't there, and that was sarcasm. I simply posted that he did good work for me, he's a friendly guy and happens to stand about 5" taller than I do. It was meant to be helpful, not critical.

Sorry you took offense to the post, but it wasn't intended that way at all.

Hope this helps.

I wanted to have a 336 35 Rem rechambered and reworked he said he did not do that. I asked if he did it for 30 WCF's and he said no. He must just be focusing on the reboring and he said he was busy. That is a good place to be in this day and age!

Now isn't that odd?

He did my M 336 30-30 to 356 W, and another M 336 to 307 W, and a M-94 30-30 to 35-30-30. All within the last three years or so. I always understood that he worked from the 30-30 sized bolt face in doing chamber conversions in the 30-30 class of receiver whether or not a rebore was involved. I never thought he was a magician. I see lots of unanswerable questions and impossible musings on CB.
