I Found My Old Lyman 311291 Mold 170 Grain Round Nose Design. Not Sure If The Round Nose Profile Might Cause Problems In The Tubular Magazine Though What Do You Guys Think Ill Be Using Them In A 30-30

I'd think long and hard about that. You might be able to "flatten" the nose in a lubrisizer though.

It was designed for 30-30. Most jacketed bullets for 30-30 are round nose.

Need I really say any more?

I always wondered why there was the concern, when, as you say, most factories are round nosed.

Check out the old manuals in Castpic's and see how many loads are there for the 311291.

At some point the idea of "blunt nosed" bullets in a tube magazine became "flat nosed" only.
Not sure where or why but I go with what the factories make. If it was a problem the lawyers would have put an end to it by now.

Yep, it was originally designed for tube-magazined .30-30's.

It shouldn't be neglected when it comes to other .30 caliber applications, neither.

The grand old 311291 (originally was shown as 308291) has been with us since 1906 and was developed specifically for the 30-30 and 303 Savage.

Here is the reason that 30-30 round nosed bullets are plenty safe in a tubular magazine. Note the way they come into the lifter. That is the way they stack up in the magazine.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.......

In a .30-30?

I ment that I use rn boolits in my .44 tubular magazine, I also use rn jacketed bullets in my 30-30, A 240 grain bullet in a 30-30 would be LOOOOOONG. LOL

Back "in the day" I was issued 160 RN FMJs for use in the M94 Winchesters in the patrol cars. Not a problem with them.

So if they stack up off-centered that heavily, why couldn't a spitzer be used?

Remington made a pump gun in several calibers that had spitzers. The magazine tube looked like it was twisted to offset the bullets. Think it was a madel 141?? My dad had one in 35 Remington.

Jack beat several of us to the punch with those nice pics. But, beware when loading larger calibers in magazine tubes not much larger than caliber. For example, a dose of round nose boolits in the magazine of a 45 Colt Marlin Cowboy Limited is not a good thing. You might get away with it for a long time, but respect for your companions has to be considered.

I've always used 311291 in my 30-30's/Winchester 94s and never had any kind of problem with feeding or the RN bothering the primers of the cartridges loaded into the mags. If you still have some concern about that then use 311041 which has a flat nose. LLS

There is no trouble with a RN bullet in a 30-30. Now put a full snort RN in a 45-70 tubular magazine and you are asking for trouble. It is all about recoil.

In said 45-70 even the sharp edge on the small meplat flat nose can cause problems. After several ignitions in tubular magazines, Tim Sundles at Buffalo Bore had Starline make him some 45-70 cases that take a small rifle primesr, and that does the trick. No, neither Tim nor Starline will sell you such cases, I have tried that on several occasions.
