View Full Version : SAECO Hardness Tester...

As I check hardness of some of my cast boolits with a SAECO tester, I notice there are only 3 steps of different diameters to set boolits into…

I suspect they are to handle the most common sized boolits—diameter…

I think the .278” or maybe the .284” don’t sit in there well at all…

Has there ever been an insert made that would fit on the top step and have a boolit diameter to match some of the “odd” sized diameters?...

It seems that someone might have made such an insert…

BCB,

I have 2 of the early Saeco testers. The one with full instructions mentions that the face of the main screw is counterbored or recessed for to position .30, .38, and .45 caliber boolits only. I have never seen otherwise. It would be helpful to acquire a mould with a wide meplat (nose) so you can get reliable results.

For pointy boolits I squish the nose in a vise first to get an accurate reading, i.e. to have a flat surface for the pin to engage. Presumaably you could do this to get a slug to widen for a comfortable fit in the screw face bore ho;e.
