Don't worry, its already been buba-ed. I am going to re-barrel this toilet and turn it into a 35 whelen.
The problem is, that I am a little confused about the chambering process, coupled with having to make the big honkin cut for the extractor, as well as having to cut the radiused part of the barrel for the nose of the bolt.
I have to say that the only barrel I have done so far, is a british #4mk1 enfield and it was a snap in comparison.
In my mind the order of steps for re-barreling this action should go like this:
1. cut the chamber in the barrel as well as the counter bore for the nose of the bolt, and thread the barrel
2. screw the action on the barrel and use a not-go head-space gauge to determine how close i am, followed by removal of the action and trimming back of the thread shoulder to set the correct head space.
3. torque to the desired white knuckle tightness and mark the location of the extractor slot.
4. cut the extractor slot in the barrel and re-torque on the action.
5. test for functionality on all edible creatures big and small.

Will this work or do I have some steps bass-ackward?
Thanks!

I'd mark the barrel and action on your first tightening so you get it exactly back the second time.

I like step number 5 too.

Good idea. They marked the original barrel and action for location too. I wonder if that was for the same purpose?
Do all Mauser barrels have that huge cutout for the extractor or is that specific to the Arisaka?
What about the radiused bolt-face?

mauser's do not have the cut out for the extractor. i'm not sure about the arisaka's.

Springfield's and Winchester 70 pre 64 have the coned bolt nose and have extractor cuts.

Note: Just so you know, the type 99 has 16.99 threads per inch. If your lathe can cut 17 tpi, that will get 'er screwed in there.......

Yeah, Praise the Lord too, cause my lathe is so old it only does American threads! Guess I lucked out again!

As long as we are talking about japanese threads, does anybody know where I could pick up a die to help dress those threads? I was thinking about chasing them to 90% and using the die to finish them to the exact size.
What are those threads anyway?
Does anybody know for absolutely sure what the metric designation is?

Dunlap's Gunsmithing says they are 1.050"X17 TPI. No metric description though.
