Will Lyman 245496 work in a SAAMI .243 Winchester chamber? Somewhere along the way, I acquired a brand new mold and have no barrel to use it in. I do have a Handi Rifle frame.

Mine works out of a 1977 era E R Shaw bbl. I have no reason to believe it was not cut to SAAMI specs.

MJ, I use that CB, sized (barely) to .244" in my Ruger #1. Accuracy is ~1 m.o.a. if I pay attention.

Maven,

Can you push it fast?

Below is a SAAMI chamber. Does anyone know if the H-R .243 chambers are like this:

'Nuther question...

If I can only get two lube grooves covered by the case neck, is 2000+ fps likely (with accuracy, naturally) using something like LBT Soft Blue?

MJ, I don't know how fast it can be pushed, as I limit mine to ~1,750fps. To get there I use 14 -15gr. WC 820 (AA #9 burn rate), or the same amount of 5744 or even H/IMR 4198. Sorry I can't be of greater assistance.

Mine goes over 12 gr of 2400. I have no need to Chrono it or push it faster.

Is that Alliant 2400 (never, know how long a jug or two of 2400 can last a feller)?

What's the COL?

How 'bout the barrel length?

MJ, Mine is Alliant brand. The bbl is 24" and COL is 2.558".

MT Gianni,

Thanks... QuickLoad says you're doing just under 1800 fps which should give you about a 140-145 yard point blank range on a 4" target (assuming an 85 grain boolit).

Are the bottom two lube grooves covered while using that 2.558" COL?

Yes I lube the bottom three and they are covered.

It works well in my 243's, being the right length. The heavier 99gr 245498 will not stablize in either my Sav or Ruger.

Does it make a good varmint load?

I just bought this mould but I thought on any of these CB with so many lube grooves you would have or want to lube them all and cover them all. Now. I do admit I have not used a Boolit with more than 2 grooves.

I load my #245496 to a C.O.L. of 2.502" to get to where I like it. My old Lyman 3rd shows a COL of 2.480". Regardless, I run them to reach .005" off rifling not pushed into it. Chamber is 243 Ackley Improved in a 26" barrel. Case capacity is a little greater than a 6mm Rem. I found 11.0 grains of Unique makes a nice shooting easy load. Listed Book velocity of the load is 1950fps. Good to 200 yards at least. I've never tried to stretch it beyond that. B.C. is listed as .202. Finding a good load using Rx7 rifle powder was tedious. Half grain up or down made a big difference and it all burned dirty. Unique load shot almost as fast and just a tad more accurate. It also makes enough pressure to nicely form my AI cases from 243 Win brass.

Hooker53, With grooves a lot depends on the lube. Tests with 38 wadcutters often find that with 4 lube grooves you get the best accuracy with only lubing one. This was Col Harrison in the late 50's early 60's. With modern lubes it is really easy to over lube with accuracy loss being the result.

Maven,

Can you push it fast?.........:

If you use a 12" twist barrel you can push it fairly fast "if you pay attention" as mentioned. The standard 10" twist for the .243 will not hold accuracy to as high a velocity.
