On Nov,6th Opening season for Deer in South TEXAS. Got this one with my 35 Whelen with Speer 250Gr Hot-Core. I have to say I made a bad shot since I missed the heart for a lung shot. But it was too easy to track the 20 yards it went lol. The shot was only at about 125 yards. :) To say I like the 35 Whelen would be an understatement. :) But I have lots of time since Deer Season runs to Jan,15th.

As you can tell the terrain is not all that forgiving with all of the Mesquite and cactus around not to mention that it was still in the low 80's so one has to watch where they step as those darn 6 Foot Rattle Snakes can sure HURT lol.

Congradulations on busting the pig ! Roasting pig meat is a delicious way to to have to suffer. 35 Whelen is one of those great cartriges.

I just can't wait for Indiana deer season to open... The fire-arms season doesn't start until the 16th of this month, and ends on the 27th-- of this month. Talk about a depressingly short hunting season for rifles. I guess that gives me some sort of incentive to get into muzzle loading. Or something...

Tom at least you have a Muzzle Loading season lol. In Texas we did have one year of Muzzle Loader season but since there were so many people using those inline Muzzle Loaders and not the traditional type. The powers that be decided to do away with Muzzle Loaders all together. So we have Bow Season and then Rifle season of which you can use anything you so wish as long as it is a center fire cartridge.

Mike I agree nothing wrong with a Hog at all. I actually prefer to get a Hog lol.

Crawdaddy Thank You. I also feel it was a successful Hunt. :)

Nice hog. Is your rifle a Weatherby? Its pretty nice too. I know a guy that has a .35 whelen and says its a hammer.

Nope it is a Marlin XL-7 Action with a Shaw Heavy Mag contour in 24 in long with a 1-14 Twist set in a Boyds Ross FT Thumb Hole stock that has had pillars installed and bedded. I have a write up here on it. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=91686&highlight=Whelen

HI,
YOU DID BETTER THAN I. I GOT SKUNKED ON THE DEER HUNT. I was given to understand that snakes just seem to disappear around hogs,as the hogs eat them????

There is a island in the Detroit River that is presently called Belle Isle. Used by the residents of Detroit for recreation, outings and has hosted the Grand Prix a few times. It was reputed to be called Hog Island after hogs were released to desimate the snake population back in the 1800's.
