This buy is For a MiHec clone of the classic Thompson 358156 HP
These are the options . .
1. We'll go for both two and four cavity brass, but that requires fifteen orders for each. Only if the fifteen are ordered will the mould get cut. Please state your preference, and a second choice if you have one.
2. Available in .358 and .360 diameters (WW). No mixing cavities.
3. If you prefer a solid, that's also available. No mixing of cavities, though.
4. HP molds come with one set of round pins. Additional penta pin sets are $16. Blank pins, also $16, are made on request. Blanks are pins you can customize by yourself. Lastly "plug pins," also $16, are available to cast solids if you want to avoid the hollow point pins projecting from the bottom of the mold when reversed.
Please include your (disguised) email address with your request. Miha will send out invoices about the time the buy gets closed. Payment's through PayPal (he's in Slovenia).
A plain base is possible, but would also require fifteen orders. Feel free to post if you're interested, but this buy is for the GC design. Enough interest and I'll assemble a list.
HP Price: $90/2C + $16 extra pins +$15 shipping
$120/4C + $16 additional pins + $20 shipping
Solid Price: $70/2C + $15 shipping
$90/4C + $20 shipping

There's lots of searchable information about this venerable design; a great choice for 38 and 357, and here in one of Miha's superb Cramer brass HP moulds. This'll be a good one!

Don't know when this mould will get cut, but likely a couple of months at least. I'm thinking both the two and four cavity moulds get made, and we hit fifteen plus on the pricier four cavity after the holidays. However, my crystal ball's been wrong before.

I'd like a 4C .360 with 3 sets of pins (round, penta, solid). If solid pins are not offered, then a set of either round or penta and I'll grind them down.

Mike,
I'll put you down as a 4C HP, with a PB first choice in parentheses w/penta pins, and blanks, if available. I really doubt we'll get a PB buy going here, but I'll note the interest. The round and penta pins can be reversed for making solids. The pin's long ends extend down, is all. I don't think Miha makes a special pin for solids yet, though I believe there was some talk of it. I'll ask, anyway. Sound good?

I seemed to have missed something. Whats the boolit weight?
The Lyman 358156 is a 155 grain solid, so the solid clone should be about the same, and I'm guessing about 140 grains in HP. I'll ask about getting a little more detailed diagram with that important information.

PB64, I put you down for standard round and additional penta pins. Let me know if you wanted the plug pins and/or the "grind yourself pins" as well. HP pins can be reversed to cast solids, so unless having the HP pin sticking out the bottom bugs you the plugs aren't needed to make full use of the mold.

I would be interested in the plain base mould if it comes off with pins to make hollow point and flat top. (Does it come with pins to do both?)
Preferably 2 Cav but could go with 4 if that’s the only option.
sffar
12-28-2011, 10:56 AM
richfr,
As it stands the mold is only available as a GC. I'll put you on the interest list for a PB. Mihec's HP pins can be reversed to make a flat nose, and there are also pins ("plugs") available to create a flat nose without having the hollow point pins protrude from the bottom of the mold.

Tim,
Perhaps someone else can weigh in, as I don't have much experience testing them. The penta pins look very cool and distinctive, though I'm betting they'll produce close to the same weight boolit in this mold.

Don't know. Probably has more to do with Miha's schedule than anything else. It's been up just short of eight weeks. Maybe someone's paying attention to how long the average buy takes, but I think it's at least a few months. I'll be giving Miha an update (if he's not watching) and maybe he'll give us an idea.

Since we seem to be in no danger of not getting the 2 cavity produced, could you change my order to a 4 cavity with all else remaining the same? I just got done casting a little over 500 bullets with the 452-200 4 cavity and I realized again how much I like 4 cavity production over the 2 cavity. Miha's molds are fantastic. I dumped the first 3 pours in with the sprues and then cast over 500 bullets until the RCBS pot was pretty low. All bullets weighed +/- 1.0gr and I had ZERO culls. Hows that for a quality mold.

Change made. Made the 2C a second choice. A moot point now, probably. I'll change that if you want.

Hello Greg,
When discussing the buy with Miha he offered a solid, but not mixing of cavities. The hollow point mold can be set up to cast both solid and hollow point by reversing some of the included hollow point pins, or using both hollow point and plug pins.
As far as a smaller hollow point, the option here would be to purchase a set of blank pins and grind them to suit (or grind the pins that come with it smaller). On post #51 45 2.1 has a diagram showing the existing hollow point as decreasing weight by 11 grains. Hope this helps.

I may be a little dense here but I am still confused about one thing. I make my mold guides with a groove so projecting pins are not too much of a problem. Since I recently began preheating my molds on a hotplate they have become a problem. Heat transfer is poor with an air gap under the mold. My question is about the "blank" pins. If they are cylindrical to allow making a custom HP they necessarily extend into the bullet. If I want to make "plugs" to cast a solid, must I grind them down myself or are "plug" pins available ready made by Miha. If ready made "plugs" are available I would like to add a set to my order. Otherwise I will just use my Lyman to cast solids.

Bob,
Not dense at all. I think my description is a little confusing and needs to get edited a bit (done).
There are "blank pins" which allow for grinding yourself, and they would project from the bottom of the mold if used for hollow points, but reversed for solids.
The "plug pins" are only plugs which allow casting solids without anything projecting from the bottom of the mold, thus making the mold flat on the bottom.

Can't say I have any experience trying it, but this wouldn't be my first choice for a 9mm autoloader. It's really designed as a revolver bullet with two crimp grooves, and it'd be on the heavy side and probably take up a lot of case volume.

Just a question on loads for this boolit, since a friend sold me some bullets that seem similar to this (they're 158 gr, and if this is like the Lyman, it'd be a 155 gr). Would 3.8 gr of Titegroup loaded at a COAL of 1.475" be an appropriate load for .38 Special? Mostly I shoot +P rated guns, but I'd hate to try these in someone's old Model 10 and damage it. That load seemed to have a bit of a kick when I tried it today (in a +P snubnose).
sffar
05-07-2012, 09:18 AM
Brick85, I've never tried Titegroup powder. Can tell you the Lee book gives 3.8 as max (15400 cup, 920 fps) for standard 38 Special loading with a 158 gr. lead bullet. Gives 3.2 gr. minimum for 815 fps.
I heard from Miha about scheduling. In short, no firm production date, but he's a full time mould maker as of May 1st and says he's working double time. Things should go quicker now. It's got to be coming pretty soon.

If the PB guys don't come up with the fifteen count I wonder if Miha might machine the GC out of the GC moulds for the PB guys?
I would be happy to wait until the 15 count was achieved for the PB Mould.
I'm sure when this group buy ends there will be others still wanting this boolit.
Especially now that the PB gas checks are becoming more popular & available. :-)

I believe there would be a little more to making an ideal variation than machining out the gas check. As to whether Miha would be willing to do that, I doubt it, but you could ask him when the buy gets closed. I know several of the talented toolmaker/machinists on this sight will do that, as well as hollowpointmolds.com. I've read posts where people have done so, and also where they've used the 358156 without the check successfully. Miha is now in the full time mold making business, so as to whether he'll make extras or variations for inventory is possible.
Some don't want gas checks, but there are many great designs available without them. The 358156 is, by definition and design a gas checked bullet. Pretty sure the reason Miha wanted fifteen orders for a PB is that somewhat new specs would be required for the PB bullet, which would be a modified 358156, I'm guessing with some changed dimensions both at the lube groove and at the base. Not all that much different, but enough to consider it a different design project.
That being said, if there are fifteen people interested in a PB bullet that's similar, it's getting treated as a separate, maybe related, project. If fifteen are interested we'll see what happens. Probably it should have it's own discussion thread, but I got the impression it'd be similar enough he would produce both design's in tandem.

Sounds like it's getting close. I'll keep my name on BOTH the gas check AND the plain base design (not going to be heart broken if he doesn't do a plain base, but if I can get the list closer to 15 people...it would be a cool addition)

I believe it is getting close. So far as I can tell, with the exception of a couple of problem projects, Miha is into buys started in the fourth quarter of last year. I'm guessing the 358156 would about four from the top.

That's not information I have exactly, other than the diagram on page one of the buy. My best guess would be a hollow point cavity displacing 12 or 15 grains. The round and penta should be about the same in that respect.
Perhaps 45 2.1 could provide a more precise answer . . . ?
. . . answer: .294" depth.
pps, I put your name on the PB list, as I'm assuming you're interested in one.

Lonegun1894, either type of hollowpoint pins can be reversed to cast solids. For those who like to rest the mold on a hot plate without the reversed pins projecting from the bottom of the mold, "plug pins" are offered which cast solids while keeping the mold bottom flat. More detailed info is offered in the first post of the thread.
I'll put your order on the list. Please feel free to post any changes you may decide upon.

I have never had a brass mold before. I have a few iron and a bunch of aluminum. Any special care and usage tips?
midnight
07-27-2012, 04:50 PM
Brass is class. I buy brass at every opportunity. A new mold is prepared like any other. Scrub it with a toothbrush and hot soapy water, rinse completely and let dry. I then blast it with brake cleaner. It then goes through 3 heat cycles. I use an old circular saw blade on a hot plate. Heat it to about 350° and allow to cool to room temp. Do this 3 times. While it is still warm, dab a little sprue plate lube on the sprue plate hinge, locating pins with a Q-tip. You can wipe a really thin coat on the bottom of the sprue plate where it does not contact the cavity. Also dab a little on the shafts of the hollow point pins on Cramer molds. You are now ready to cast.
Bob
DanWalker
07-27-2012, 09:59 PM
What does putting it through 3 heat cycles do for it?
sffar
07-28-2012, 04:24 AM
The idea being that three cycles thoroughly cooks out machining oils left in the metal, while expanding and contracting all the parts of the mold so the pins are seated and you can find how tight everything needs to be. Let some sprue oil work it's way in to the metal surfaces where it's wanted. Kind of a break-in procedure. That's what I have in mind as I do a similar procedure on a new mold. I also look for any burrs on the sprue plate holes and stone them off so there's no galling on the blocks at the get go. Same with the underside leading edge of the sprue plate. I also put anti-seize on all the threads. It may not all be necessary, but I have a routine I follow with a new mold, or any new to me mold similar to midnight's.

I mixed a batch of alloy last weekend for this mold.
Now all I need to order are the gas checks.
What size gas check do I get to fit this sizer and bullet base?
sffar

Griz44mag,
You'll be needing .35 cal gas checks, available from Lyman, Hornady and forum member Blammer.
Sam
Or go all the way & order yourself a GasCheck tool/maker from Patmarlin or Free Chex 111
And make your own.
Both available info here on Cast Boolits.

According to the gascheckstore, the cup material thickness is a big deal on proper fit. Is that a factor with this specific bullet? I plan on pushing these pretty hard, it will be a hunting round.
sffar
08-02-2012, 04:27 AM
The tools Wal' mentioned allow some thickness variation and customization, but the bullet should accept standard checks just fine.
