Here's some info on lead with a very short window of response: There is on auction at govliquidation.mil for lead.....3500 lbs in Groton CT, and 19,100 lbs at Ft. Meade MD. This is our government at work selling surplus. Maybe one (or more) of our cast boolit people on the EAST COAST has the resources to snag this stuff.
The opening date is today, and the auction closes the 9th of Nov. So far, the bidding is not anywhere near a buck-a-pound.

Thanks for the heads-up. Do you have the link to the web site?

I just rechecked it and of course I got it wrong. the site is govliquidation.com and it is one of those you need to check every now and then....their auction stuff changes every week. Most of it is an ebay type auction with opening and closing dates, but there is a section of the site called "Uncle Sam's Retail Shop" and they have fixed prices. They have the best price I have found on once fired brass, but they sell clothing, boots, HOLSTERS, and other stuff at Usually good prices too.

Yup, I had trouble with your first link and then used Google and got it sorted out.
Thanks again for this, it's more "good to know" stuff.

Very cool. It's too bad I'm not closer. I think it is interesting though that both auctions state that mutilation is required to remove from the base.

You have to post 10 grand to bid.

I have no idea how I'd move 19,100 lbs of lead from Maryland to here, but I'd like to have that problem!

I have probably dealt with that much lead in my life. But I keep very little for my own casting.

Like Ronbo says, it is a problem I would like to figure out how to solve.

3500 LBS. (approx.) Lead Bricks without attachments on wood pallet. Pallet included in weight. All scrap under this contract requires multilation by the buyer prior to removal if on the base or mutilation must be witnessed and certified by DOD personnel at another facility. Title to the material does not pass to buyer until scrap has been multilated. Buyer agrees to allow USG personnel to witness destruction. GL will load

Property must be cut up, shredded, or melted down per Government Mutilation Requirements.

Just how do you cut up shred or melt 3500lbs of lead prior to leaving?

You get an embossing stamp made that says "Certified Multilated Lead" and emboss each brick before you load it. ;-)

What was the final selling price? Wonder how they will mutilate it to get it?

Two burner camp chef, two dutch ovens, 15 gallons of propane, several quarts of used motor oil, 10 gallons of water, and 4 lyman ingot molds. Take about 10 hours.

That there is gooooood soft stuff. I'll bet it came from the Electric Boat yard and is a left over lot used on the nuke boats to line the reactors IIRC.
