Each year, I try to invite as many young hunters as possible to hunt on my place. Don't need to tell anybody here how important this is for all concerned. This afternoon, 9-year old J. B. Baker killed his first whitetail on my ranch. He used my 1894C pushing the Ranch Dog TLC359-175-RF out the barrel.

J.B. started shooting my 39A Thursday afternoon with a couple of shots from the "C". Friday afternoon more of the same with a couple of shots from the "C" at a life size deer target. This morning was a bust but within a few minutes of J.B. and his dad crawling in the box blind, he made the 75-yard shot on the buck. J.B. placed the bullet right were he practiced, through the heart!

Nicely done young man, my first whitetail was no where near as big.
I guess he has never read any of the outdoor magazines, if he had he would have know the 357 magnum isnt enough to kill deer.

Outstanding!

I bought a new Marlin years ago to shoot CAS. Made a comment to the effect what a dandy little brush gun it would be for deer and was immediately admonished by the know nothing pizzant clerk at the counter that, 'no that would never work'. There are some truly foolish, ignorant people in this world. I've since sold that gun and replaced it with a Rossi 92. Either are more than capable of the task.

I hope that young lad has a lifetime of enjoyment hunting and the comaraderie that comes with it.

I'll bet he cant wait to get to school Monday to tell all about it. Good choice with the .357. I can usually tell when one of my students kill their first deer before they show me the picture. They usually have a black eye with a circular cut over the top of it because their dad believes a 300 WSM is the only deer rifle made. BTW, I teach 5th grade and many of the black eyes with scope rings are sported by girls.

I hear you, it is too bad that young kids must shoot big guns. I'm sure that there is some effect from that in the stats kept on decrease in participation as a pastime for people this age. I know it would be a small effect but getting knocked out by a rifle would tell me not to do it again. I've always felt that Marlin should have offered the "C" with a youth stock. Even two butt stocks, youth and full.

Junior and Ranchdog:
I'll bet valid statistics do relate caliber with interest drop-off for kids.

And dads wonder why the kids start flinching while shooting.

That's a pretty nice buck Mr. Baker, worthy of that proud smile. I hope it is the first of many. I bet dragging that big critter was a tough chore.

Great buck! It's a great thing you're doing, Ranch Dog. I remember hunting with my dad as a kid - never saw or shot anything like that, but it taught me a lot and got me interested in the sport. I can't wait until my kid(s) will be old enough, and pray it's something they'll want to do!

I got a late start in life deer hunting. i thought that Ducks, Geese, and blue mud was it. My first 3 in 3 years were all BIG bodyed Illinois year and a half olds. Very good eating, but small racks. Made some of my buddys mad as I said all you had to do was get in the stand and wait 15 minutes. Told one guy, I couldn't even get my candy bars opened in time.....nothing too this deer hunting..a few times since then it's took a little longer...

Nice going:

I'll bet he'll be pressuring mom and dad to buy him a lever action now.

I'd also bet that mom and dad might very well give in to that pressure.
