Can anyone provide any information on this? It is not listed on the Lyman site.

It is a GC design.

Any experience on how it may shoot or why it was dropped as an offering?

Thanks.

why it was dropped as an offering?

Lyman dropped a " boat load " of their designs. There does not seem to be a rhyme or reason as to the ones that they chose to drop. Many casters have begged them to make some of the old designs. It has fell on deaf ears so far.

Don: How about a picture of the mould? Then we can tell you how to load for it.

It probably had a specific useage like .30-06 or .30-40 or some other primary application, but will crossover to others.

Ben has it right. Lyman has discontinued some of it's best designs. I suppose it was based on sales figures, but that is only a guess.

The shortening of the Lyman list would have been a result of the decline in interest in cast in the 80's-90's maybe even the 70's before. You can't really blame them. We are a small bunch of cranks in the grand scheme of things.

The best thing that has occured is the likes of this forum where we create a demand and cater to it ourselves. That way we get what WE want not what a manufacturer THINKS we want.

03A3 2 groove/4 groove & Cast

Harrison in his studies and writings on 30 cal clearly stated that "boreriders" as they are called will shoot better in 2 groove barrels. He cited Lyman # 311334 as being the best bullet. It was discontinued. Another recommendation was the Saeco 301 which suucceeded the RG4. Bores consist of lands and grooves; in the 03-A3 the lands occupy most of the circumference of the rifle bore. With a bullet having a long or "borerider "nose, the nose rides on top of the lands and is positively guided by them. The relatively short bullet body occupies the grooves. The dimensions of the bullet are important; the nose must be .301-.302 and the body must be .309-.310. If the bullet is undersize then it will slump or tilt on its long axis...in the bore and come out the muzzle in that posture with wild shooting as a result. Another noted rifleman by the name of Sears advocated "bumping up" the nose of a bullet that was undersize. He built a simple jig that allowed that to be done. In the 4 groove barrels the bullet needs a longer body that provides more bearing surface. Bullets like Lyman 311284, 311290, 311299, and 311291 etc, although they can work well in a 2 groove, seem to work better in a 4 groove barrel. There are other designs by Lee & Saeco that also do well in both 2 and 4 groove barrels. Proper bullet dimensions and fit are always key factors as well as the correctly adjusted powder charges.

No listing for a 311344, but there is one for the 311334 that Mr. Harrison wrote about.

Could 311344 by a typo?

thats what i love about the group buy option here, an older ,discontinued design can be ressurected if only one member can provide a sample boolit to send to swede or whoever and if there is enough interest ,,,, WE can have it WHEN we want it .
isn't life great ,,,,sometimes

On another note, with relation to the "We can have what we want" issue. "What we will get" will probably be a damn site better than what we would have gotten from them.

The custom mould makers here at this site are producing such nice stuff it is almost criminal.

Paying an extra $20 for a custom mould and getting something that is far in excess of any generic product you can get off the shelf that may or ay not be made right, is a small price to pay for a product that will almost without fail produce a better boolit than any generic mould could do even if it was a "Nominal" mould and not one of the fringe tolerance parts of a given run. IE as the cherry wears the mould's in that run progress thru the tolerance range from low to nominal to high in the range, and then junk follows.

The lathe bored moulds we are getting can be in a run that is effectively endless, as tool wear can be compensated for during the run by a simple tweak in the offsets in the program.

This is how Swede is able to offer a 311-299, a 312, 314, & 316 all from the same run with no additional charges. Lyman and RCBS can't do this because they are still using cherries which only yeild one size cavity. They can make over or undersized cherries however they aren't going to. The best you can hope for is an oversized cavity so you can size the Boolits to your needs.

Sorry guys it is a 311334. Old age really sucks.

It looks like I need to find a old 2 groove 03-A3. I will see if it works in a .308 I am playing with first.

You can find a little info on 311334 in the Lyman Cast bullet hand book #1. Page 116 and 117....................Terry

Up until at least the mid 1970's you could call Lyman and ask them to make a discontinued mould. If they still had the cherry, and if they figured it was in good enough shape to make a decent copy of the mould, they cut the mould for you at a slight premium over the list price of current listed moulds. I got a few discontinued designs this way. One of them was a 439186, the standard design for 43 Spanish. At the time there was no brass available for the cartridge so sales were not enough to keep the mould in the line (it has since been re-introduced). When my "custom copy" arrived, it was hand stamped "429186". Fortunatley, that was a typo and the mould cast a bullet of correct dimensions.

I don't see a listing in the 1957 handbook for a 311344. It may possible be a mismarked 311334, similar to the above. Pictures would help ......

Bob S.

looked through all my info on old Lyman moulds and even checked The Ideal Handbood designs. Could not find any mention of a 311344. Will keep looking.

I found something interesting about Lyman molds.
Check this list out. (http://www.darkcanyon.net/lymancastbulletinfo.html)

Thanks for the link Sonnypie. I clicked on the Dark Canyon site and note the owner has passed away so it might be a good idea to peruse the information on that site and cut/paste whatever we want to preserve. Although it says the site will no longer be updated, we do not know how long it will remain available to us.

I have an old 311334 but it is undersized, more like .298-.299 on the nose. That's unfortunate because it's a great design. I've beagled the mold and got decent results but would really like a new NOE version of this mold at .301/.311. While I'm at it a NOE version of 311413 would be nice, only heavier/longer, like the Saeco #62. It's the spitzer type 'squib' boolit.

Blackthorn,
Since the owner has left us, and the site is in possible jeopardy, I copy & pasted the info into an email to myself.
I consider it plagiarism to do such, but such information should be preserved.
In incidences like this thread, I think knowledge like this is important to share, and to preserve.

That said, I will go out on a limb here and let the Moderators decide. Pardon me.

According to the list of Lyman bullets from the above link, it is a 190 grain bullet.

Hard to say, value would likely depend of what the buyer is willing pay.

I have an old Lyman #557489 .54 ringtail mold for the Sharps percussion rifle. Was blown away when a guy heard of it and offered me 100 bucks sight unseen, I didn't sell but opted to hang onto it.
