I am shooting a H&R BC in 45/70. Slugged the bore at .457. I got a lee push through die that sizes .457. The lube i use is my take on the 411 lube and i am shooting smokeless powder. My main concern at first was leading. I am happy to say i have ran loads from 1100 to 1700 fps with out any leading. The problem is i cant seem to find a load it likes and it seem to dislike them all pretty much the same. I am wondering even though there is no leading present if sizing them bigger would help and how much bigger can i go? Oh ya the bullet i am using is a lee HB in 405. Now i had mixed responses in using this boollit from people on here but was told to try it anyway. It didnt shoot anybetter so i modified the mold by removing the plug and making it a flat base. Still no difference.

Thoughts please. Sizing? Lube? Boollit???????????

If there is any way for you to, size some pure lead projectiles to 452 or so, then paper roll em up to 460. Size to 459, lube litely and load without a crimp. Was the only thing that made my trapdoor shoot acceptably.

You should have no trouble going with .459. It may well improve the accuracy. As long as it chambers OK the fatter is usually better.

What size are your boolits dropping from the mold? If they're in the .460" range, load up an unsized dummy and see if it'll chamber. If it will chamber, try loading up a few and shoot them. You might be surprised.

I think you need a larger bullet. .458 - .459.

What do you meant it doesn't like the load? Are we talking 2 foot patterns at 25 yards, or are you just not able to get 1 moa out of the gun?

6 to 10 inch groups at a 100yds. I don't expect 1" groups even though the 300grs HP loads I hunt with will shoot 1 ragged hole at a 100 but I don't think a 2 or 3 inch group isnt asking too much.

My friends BC shoots .459 well. I cast 350 gr. flat base boolits for him and lube them with 50-50/Red Carnuba.

We don't know, because you didn't say, what size they are dropping from the mold. A good bullet fit is always important to accuracy and a good place to start is with the largest diameter that will chamber reliably, make up some dummy rounds and find out. This way it should be a decent fit in the rifles throat and if that is the as cast diameter without any sizing so be it.

If the bullet will snuggle up in the throat without being so tight as to cause chambering problems or pull the bullet when unloading it should help.

They size between .460 - .462 with straight WW's.

.460 - .462 . your either doing something wrong casting or theres a problem with the mold or alloy . are the boolits round ? ... maybe a description of your casting technique might help

Their round after going through the sizer die. Shouldn't really matter if they are not perfectly round out of the mold.

i dont think you hardly ever see a perfectly round bullet from a production mold , however if your getting boolits .002 out of round from the mold theres a problem .. sizing die's dont fix everything

sizing down 3-5 don't help them any.
try filling the lube grooves before sizing.
also the make a dummy from an unsized one is a good idea the bbl will size them fine.

A closer look and measuring put them at .459 - . 460. I made some dummy rounds and they chamber so i will try some as cast and see what happens.
