View Full Version : Why is it called the 'Cruise Missile'?

Ok, I hope this is not too dumb of a question. I shoot a Japanese rifle in 6.5MM. I've seen reference to a 170 grain boolit called 'cruise missile' that comes from a Lee mold.

Alright, why is it called that? I've never seen one.

Thanks!

I think it has to do with the extreme length of the bullet.

Because it was designed by some castboolits members specifically to fill the extremely long and large throat of the military Swedish Mausers, and thus seems like it's about a half mile long.

Several other members have since discovered that it works pretty well in the Jap if shortened, since the lube grooves are almost the size of the gas check shank. I shortened mine (a late production mould that typically casts a much larger than spec boolit) so the boolit would still chamber in my Swedes. Originally the nose would be small enough to go up into the bore a lot further, but for the last few years they've been making them too big.

It's a real shooter in my Swed if you seat it out max to lands and don't try to run it to hot!

I bought this mold to try in my Carcano. Haven't gotten to that yet, but the mold is fun to have just to show the boolits to people. The do look like miniature missles.

And, they are pretty big. My Carcano slugs .270, and the missle will fill it.

Here is a comparison photo. You will understand.

It picked up the name when we made out first buy on the bullets. They were single cavity Lee molds. I still have two of them. We sorta thought they looked like a Cruse Missile, hence the name.

Yeah.

But in reality a cruise missle is shorter and fatter:bigsmyl2:
