Hi I have a 310 gr lee mold and would like to know what variance is acceptable they come out 308-315 gr Shooting a 44 mag at 70 yards how critical is it. My cva 44 rifle shoot good groups but there are always flyers. My brinell is 14 and these are mag loads 2400 and first cold shot is always 2-3 inches high. What is the most common cause of flyers? andy help would be great.

Almost sounds like your boolits are undersize to begin with. Also try and seat them differently, by that I mean that mold comes with 2 crimp grooves. I NEVER have flyers ever with that boolit. Also mine are water dropped with a final BHN of 28min, they go up as much as 30 but so long as I have a minimum of 22, that's just my preference. What type of lead are you casting with? With my wheel weights and 1% tin and water dropped for me it's automatically up there on the hardness scale. You may want to give some thought about trying out some H110 next time you load them up, in my rifle it just loves that powder.

Another thing that came to mind. The gas checks themselves have to be square with the boolit. Sometimes when seating them they will go on at an angle just keep an eye on that. That just may be a good reason for the occasional flyer.

I have mixed 2 parts WW 3 part lead, sized .430 GC , heat treat at 450 for an hour and droped in cold water I test them after 2 to 3 weeks and they are a brinell of 14 acording to my seco tester. Mabe they are gust not hard enough for that kind of presure.

I load seat the bullet just so they engrave the lands.

Sized and lubed mine average 313. 5 grains. I load them to the lower crimp groove, and use 21 grains of H110 in my Super Redhawk. It shoots remarkably well, with either aluminum gas checks or the Hornady gas checks.

how hard are your bullets and what are they sized at

Don't get hung up on hardness, 14 BHN is fine as long as you are using a gas check and sizing .001" over bore diameter.

Flyers can happen with a clean barrel, especially if you haven't run a dry patch through it.

I have had the same problem with the same bullet in my ruger 77/44 I am thinking it might be my casting skill level

The 310 lee shoots well in my 44 mag (rifle & revolver) and in my 444. Groups more than adequate for me, and no more fliers than I would expect with old eyes and reduced upper body strength.
