I just came across a deal on a Ruger #1 that was too good to pass up. Problem is that it's chambered in .300 Win Mag. Way too much gun for hunting here in GA.

Rebarreling to .35 Whelen is probably in its future, but for now I'd like to try some cast boolits and surplus powder. Has anyone had success shooting cast out of a .300 Win Mag? Which boolits would you recommend? I'm thinking mostly for target shooting, not hunting.

Thanks! :)

Okay, maybe a better question would be: has anyone around here ever shot cast boolits from a .300 Win Mag, and if so, what loads/components worked for you (or didn't work)?

The problem with the .300 Win. Mag is the short neck. The .30 caliber boolits I use are all so long that the majority of the boolit is intruding into the powder. All my .30 caliber boolits wear gas checks, and I'm not willing to have that gas check seated below the neck, there is too much risk of it coming loose and floating around in the case.

I'm not saying cast boolits won't work in the .300 WM, I'm just saying I have too many other .30 caliber platforms that are better.

I've had pretty good success lately with the "30 HBC" boolit from a few years back in .300 Weatherby Magnum. I run it a little over 2000 FPS with 7383. Haven't yet experimented with other boolits in it, but I will. I have a GB #311291 mould coming. The biggest difference between the Weatherby and Winchester is that the Weaterby has about 3/8" freebore with any bullet that'll go through the magazine. Doesn't hurt a thing, as long as the bullet's a snug fit in that freebore section. I think that's a general principle.

I used Lyman's 311284 in a .30-338 for a while. The base extended below the neck but it shot all right./beagle
