View Full Version : How to ignore a poster

It seems there are occassionally some folks who don't see eye to eye all the time. That is fine, if we all liked the same thing, we would all be married to the same woman.
SO!
If there is a poster who you find irritating, or aggravating, here is all you have to do. Click on his name on a post. On the page that comes up, there is a place where you can click on, to ignore poster, so you don't have to read thier posts.
This being said, you may not want to rush into blacking out someone's comments. You may not always agree, and certainly don't need to respond to thier posts. However, sometime they just may have a bit of information you have never heard before, and it would be your loss to miss it.

There are a few I just ignore, due to their lack of basic manners, I do not respond or acknowledge them.

Excellent point Waksupi,
I've been on the web now close to 8 years at least. And I've learned that it is just as easy to just not read what that poster has to say if they 'bug' you.
Once blocked, you may wind up just cheating yourself. Much easier to just ignore their posts than to miss a piece of information you've wondered about for years.

Good post, Ric. There are a few posters that have helped me to perfect my warp speed scrollpast skills, but I don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Occasionally, a poster that might be IMO bad mannered or boring, will come up with a good idea, so I shamelessly exploit the acorn that he has stumbled into, and do not respond.

Good post Ric, but I usually just leave them in place and do the Curmudg Scroll. My Mama taught me a long time ago manners (and Daddy enforced it), and sometimes I just enjoy scrolling past, but just barely in earshot, to hear all the goings on. It's my amusement for the day, dontchaknow.
Oh my, I just realized y'all mighta been talkin' 'bout lil ole me.... sundog

Iffin you just point/click and zap everyone who annoys you the world would get awfully lonesome. Everybody annoys somebody sometimes.....except me of course[smilie=1: ...it is amzing how fast the speed scroll wheel on the mouse can work,,iffin you choose to ignore this go ahead it won't hurt the feelings...I sold em for beer money years ago:-D
quite honestly I thought this thread would stir the pot it bit more than it has,,bummer .............if one does not stir the pot from time to time the stuff on the bottom gets all sticky and burnt,,it can be a good thing...

Might be talking about me too!
But I find you are all gentlemen and even if we all have disagreements, I never notice what I would call anger here.
I was reading another site and the conversation between a bunch of them was downright rude and if they would have lived close there would have been a riot.
I like it here and never find a need to block anyone and never will. I respect everyones opinions and all of you do too. There is a lot of friendly jabbing and I enjoy it.

I've yet to come across anyone who is offensive on this site. There certainly is no one that I would put on ignor. Must have thick hide.
Jim
Of course there is the alternative , instead of ignoring the other one, of making light (politely of course), of the other's style. There is a risk of misinterpretation and escalation to a 'contest' ocurring, so some good judgement must be exercised.
Or if you're really ticked at the individual, you can play with his mind and go for the 'contest'. If done right, the other one will get banned, the risk is obvious.
Actually, this is a test to see who has 'ignored' me. You can tell by the long long list of those that don't respond. :-))))

Yes, misinterpretation is the biggest problem after all. Many of us can't put down in words the same thing that is in our mind, seems to be an affliction of old age.
Cat fur in the skivie drawer!!! Thats a good one!

Could be me, too! Come to think of it, it could be almost any of us. Don't most of us get a touch of sick humor or put forth opinions that may not be popular with mainstream thinking? How we deal with one another's idiocyncrasies probably indicate our own level of maturity. We all need to have a little thickness to our skin from time to time. Being "Brothers of the Gun" we all need to stick together anyway, even if we're not always totally in agreement. It's like the Bible says, we are all members of the same body. One part isn't more important than another. And each has it's function. Leave out one part and you've got trouble. I don't always agree with all of you. And some have a sick sense of humor, at least as bad as my own. But I tolerate, indeed, treasure each of you. Variety is, indeed, the spice of life. Long ago I learned to appreciate differences in people, whether it be in the color of their skin, their religious beliefs, or their social skills. If we learn to enjoy others, in spite of our differences, we are that much the richer. If we let our differences get between us we all suffer. I choose, instead, to enjoy those differences. Some of us may be certifiable but we sure have fun together, too.

I used to work for a fella that used that saying when neccessary, I admired him more than he will ever know, he was the best boss I have ever had,but he will never know that because political BS got him seperated from employment. The man was an artist in both making machinery and people do what he wanted/needed.... that phrase means alot, and says alot without saying much, just as he did.....unfortunately the american work place can not handle people that just go out and get their job done, when it makes others look bad/slow/less than....especially when they are incabable of saying YES when the answer is no.
.Just do not ever slip up and tell your wife that line.....it will be interesting....I guarantee... and "I was just foolin" will not dig you out of that hole very quick.....

I don't know Ric. The sorry point for moderators is that any fun activity is always more fun as a private than when you have to take charge.
I sometimes think that if I was a moderator with the responsibility for the board, it might be pretty easy to believe that there is a problem .... when .... one doesn't really exist.
But authority is injected here, long before I ever need to worry about an ignore button.

Most everyone here has mellowed out. But there are a few that no longer post here that may well have tossed in a sharp comment or two.
"Maybe no one can see me?" I thought y'all moderators could see everyone's ignore-lists in their preferences! (toung firmly in cheek)

My dad said "don't argue with an idiot as people will not be able to tell the difference"
Scientist say "LEAD" causes mental retardation" that is my excuse what is yours?
My wife says I am obsesive compulsive. I don't believe that 10's of 1000,s of rounds of loaded ammo makes me obsesive nor does the 100's # of powder make me compulsive.
Laying all joking aside I like the way all the posters handle themselfs and that is the reason I hardley ever go anywhere else.
I got sick on the AK/ simi auto boards makes me blush and I worked on a freight dock for 30+ years. When I found this site it was a breath of fresch air.

Mike, try it again, maybe Willie will give it a tweak. If that doesn't work, when you see the person's name at the top of the post, not reading it may be a way to ignore it. I will await further input from Carpetman, as I am sure he will have some other suggestions.

a) isn't that what is running through all of our minds as we read this thread? Maybe not, there are a few big ego's.
b) blocking 100% most likely can't be done in the case of when your 'favorite' person is quoted.

.................HA! Me three. My wife likes to entertain (have family over) for holidays etc, and so do I except I hate the getting ready part so I stay in the shop. She'll stick her head in the door and tell me to do so and so. I say 'Yes dear", do it immediately the haul butt back into the sanctum of the shop. I call it maintaining a low profile. :-)

Well fellas I'll tell you secret for being ignored. Don't spred it around.
When the bride gets on a verbal roll, I smile and say "We have exhausted my level of interest in this topic!"
Brings the conversation to a screeching halt and she's usually silent for the several days.
Works most every time.
