Cabin fever lends itself to many wanderings of the mind..

Been thinkin' bout' the potentially risky venture of reboring my No 1 from 300 Winchester Mag to something more cast boolit friendly.

416 Remington would be a hoot, so I emailed Dan at:

http://www.cutrifle.com/

-told him my rifle was .622 at the muzzle and he replied:

Pat, At .622 muzzle diameter we couldn't go larger than a .375 cartrige. The
biggest problem is the positioning of the neck on the 300 win. It's so far
forward that you'll have to go to a longer cartrige to clean up the chamber.
Cost of a rebore/rechamber is $295 plus return freight.
Dan

So I guess that leaves 375 Winchester or 375 H&H Magnum. The H&H has the same parent case, but is .230 shorter.

Questions that come to mind (and I leave this up to the experienced cast bootliteers) is:

A. How does the 375 H&H mag perform with cast boolits?

B. Can I reform my 300 Winchester Mag brass?

I'm sure more questions will come to mind, but whatcha Ya'll think?

The H&H is a wonderful boolit shooter. If I were to do a custom rerifle I would go with a bit slower twist than the standerd 1/12". As long as you dont plan on shooting any 350/400gn boolits a gentler twist will be helpfull.
Just look at the 38/55 in its origonal form for a comparison.
As for reforming 300 win mag they are too short. Just gotta bite the bullet there.

The cases are bout' 3/16" shorter (300 Win- 375HH). Might gain a 1/16" from the shoulder stretching on the 300 win, so that would leave bout' 1/8" short.

When you form a .308 Win to a .358 Win it's about that much shorter I think, and they still work well.

Maybe work or no?.. I'm kinda cheap when it comes to this stuff, and have been known to make such descicions based on brass..

Some very positive customer responses on his website of the performance of his re-bores. Hmmm.

I don't have the money now but still Hmmmmm.. [smilie=1:

what did rugger quote you on rebarrelling? If you are interested, I have a #1B (26" bbl) 30-06 barrel and forend in very clean shape...$200 would ship and insure it to your front door.

Idaho Sharpshooter, if anyone wants the barrel only I'd be in the market for the forend.

I reckon by the time you sold the barrel on evil bay and fitted a new barrel, you'd come out even or in front. Unfortunately reboring is not really an option her in Australia, there is only one shop who does the work and they charge about the same for a new barrel. MIck.

Pat,

You might want to look at the 358 Norma Mag. I open up 300 mag cases for my bolt gun in that caliber, so I think it would be a good candidate.

Yep but I want to go bigger in diameter.

Far as I can tell by my drawings is the neck on the .300 Win mag is .160 and the neck on teh 375 HH is .52, which leaves about .108 for stretch.

The 300 Win is 2.620 long and the 375 HH is 2.850 long.

So the win 2.620 plus .108 gained by reforming would bring the 300 win reformed length to 2.728.

.122 or slightly under 1/8" short. May work for cast boolits wouldn't it?
