View Full Version : Boolits sized .310 in Savage 110 30-06

My Savage 110 seems to have difficulty with boolits sized .310 or larger. The rifle shoots smaller boolits really well. It has a Boyds laminate stock which was glass bedded by Ben, and a smooth, light Rifle Basix trigger. Because of its short throat, it won't chamber boolits sized larger than .3095 easily. It also has a tough time with longer boolits even when sized .309. Ben often gives me new boolits to try or allows me to borrow a mold, but I have to size any .310's down to .309 to use them. Have any of you Savage guys experienced this issue as well?

Here is a link to range report from Saturday if you are interested.

Probably just has a tight throat.

If it shoots .3090" dia cast bullets well, it has spoken its peace, now listen to what it is saying and feed it what it is asking for.

Those are my thoughts, someone else here may see it differently.

I assume the size statement of .395 is a typo. No way a 30 caliber should chamber something that close to .40.

You are right. It should say .3095. It has been corrected.

If it workx, don't fix it!
Why you wanna stick over-sized slugs in it if 309's work well?
Sounds like you think the 310's are too tight.

I agree with Ben.

I can understand experimenting a little. But when the rifle sez, "Patootie, I don't like those." It's time to step back a bit.
Kinda like working up an accuracy load for a particular set of components in a particular rifle. When one combination out shoots another, step back to the better combination.

I shoot a 1964 Winchester Model 70. It has had countless thousands of rounds fired through it and still slugs out at .3085" digital, or .3084" mechanical. So I'm careful what I feed it.
When you find your magic load, then focus on making it a one hole, 5 shot group. ;-)
Before you get old, and blind, and shaky.

As a soon to be new CB loader, this is exactly the kind of things that I like to read. Thanks for your help guys.

If the .310" don't want to chamber then you have to go smaller. My 1967 era Savage 110 still only takes .309" boolits to make it happy.

Some day if you shoot it enough the throat may erode enough to need the .310" boolits.
