I'm glad the gun-show's over. It was getting expensive.

Today, I went back to look over the pickins and ran across an unfired 1858 Remington for $175.00.

I grabbed it. It has a few handling marks but overall, it's perfect.
Not wanting to leave well enough alone, I want a spare cylinder in case the indians attack.

I have no idea how to tell if it's a Pietta or Uberti. There are some markings but none that I see that say the maker.

Any clue what to look for.

Every Uberti and Piatta that I have ever seen have the makers name on the side of the barrel. I own a couple of C&B revolvers that have only proof marks and Made in Italy stamped on them with no makers names. As over the years there have been quite a few makers in Italy there is no way of telling who made them. About the only thing I could say is to look for someone that has a Piatta or Uberti pistol and test their cylinder in your gun and see if it fits.

My 10 year old Uberti is marked on the underside of the barrel. Its mostly hidden by the loading rod.

Some folks like em though, so I hate to be critical. Soft internals. Periods of poor quality control. Hard to find parts.

Stay away from your heavier charges and it will last longer.

Actually, stay away from 3F too. Use 2F and the gun will probably be more accurate and have less wear.
