do you need gas checks with black powder?

I will be shooting LEEs R.E.A.L bullets. Do you need a gas check ?

No. The REALs do pretty well in muzzle loaders and aren't designed for checks. I don't know how one could ram a check anyway, it'd have to be full diameter for it to do any good and may prevent the bullet from expanding out and obturating in the bore.

i have used a lubed felt wad with a thin card wad on both sides its did help acuracy a bit with heavier hunting charges , but made no differance with lighter target/plinking loads
