Have any of you used half jackets on your cast boolits instead of a gas check?

Yes I did many years ago.. I used to use a C&H Swagomatic to form half jacketed bullets using soft wire lead and purchased jackets. They worked OK but were almost as expensive as buying jacketed bullets. Lots of work to save nearly nothing. I did have a choice of bullet weights though.

Could these half jackets be made from spent brass? I'm going to purchase some gas checks from sagebrush7 that are .096" tall and I hope they work for what I need but if not this was my next thought. I'm wanting to get a GC/Jacket tall enough to cover the gas port in my 450 bushmaster barrel because there have been reports of gas cutting with the shorter GC's. I'm still wanting to shoot a cast boolit and this seems like it may be a good fix for the issue.

Are you swaging them? You could always order a custom mould with a long GC shank to work with those checks from Mountain Molds, Accurate Molds, or LBT.

I'm wanting to use the Lee .452 300 grain mold but get the base covered with a .125 to .150 GC/jacket.

You need to talk to BTSniper in the swaging forum.

Search some of his posts. He's using 9mm and 40 for jackets for 40 and 45.

I sent him a PM asking what he thought. Thanks!
