30-30 is about ideal for cast
nearly ideal case volume , to get about all you the velocity your going to want
a nice long neck , you can put a long boolit in one

it head spaces on the rim makes life easy

usualy it is limited by over all length of , and the lever guns ability to feed it

i know the make a handy rifle in 30-30, but a bolt , or pump would be so nice

so would i be crazy if i wanted a savage 10 or 11 in 30-30

i know that the Savage 340 is a bolt gun in 30-30, and i keep hearing how handy they are and if i ever see one , i will probably be in trouble with the wife when i bring it home

but built on a current 10 or 11 action with a 308 barrel cut to a 30-30 chamber it could take 55k or better think of the possibilities for heavier bullets

brass is reasonable and plentiful compared to some calibers

ok here is were several of you tell me how wrong i am or scratch you heads and say you would like one also.

I always wanted a REM. 788 in a 30-30. Just never have seen one. So I got a T/C Encore with a 24 inch 30-30 barrel. Maybe not as accurate as a good bolt but close.
30-30 is a great cartridge. I have 2 Marlins the TC and working on a Winchester...Terry

I saw a Savage, don't know the model but it is clip fed, today when checking on some guns I have on consignment. It looked used but not bad. If someone wants me to I will get the particulars for them.

Just looked on Gun Broker and the rifle I saw is most likely a Savage 340. Gun broker has 340s in 30-30 from about $200 to $400. They must not be too rare.

If I ever saw a 2nd hand bolt .30-30 I would leap on it. Great cast rifle.

thanks but no thanks , it would have to be in Wisconsin i don't want to deal with transfers right now , and i just dropped all my money on a knife, dies and a mold , I will have to save my pennies

maybe if i get lucky there will be one at the fire station gun show this winter, so many great guns so little money.

although if i see another Israeli Mauser in .308 for 150 dollars again i will be jumping on it , i was an uneducated fool last time i passed a table of them

I know this might be going backwards a little, keep an eye out for a 30 or 32 Rem . Same case save for a Weatherby-like shoulder as the WCFs. They came in the model 7 auto and the Model 14 pump I'll bet there're are some in your neck of the woods. I'd bet there's a bolt gun or 2 around too.

You will have a problem chambering a 10 for rimmed ctgs as the box magazine isn't made to feed them, no problem with 30 remington though. The 788 30-30 was the best bolt gun made for that round, but they are like hens teeth here. The 340 rifles are good shooters but clubby in the stock and if you ever lose a magazine hang on to your wallet!

Save your pennies and track down a Winchester Model 54 .30/30 bolt gun. IMO the very best rig for that caliber to have ever come down the pike.

I lucked out at cabelas. They had a Rem 788 with scope in 30-30 for 250 otd. I traded them my Savage 340 30-30 plus 70 bucks. (I paid 165 for the Savage). The 788 is the best cast bullet rifle I have ever fired. Good luck finding one. greg

I've got one of the 788s in .30-30 too. It is a keeper for sure.

I like the idea of a .30 Remington. Is brass available? How about a current bolt action to handle the odd case head size? Remington made at least a few 6.8s in a bolt action and that is the same case shortened and necked down. I like the idea of a .25 Remington, too.

You got me thinking that you are just about correct and I have a ten inch barrel for my contender in 30-30 with a good 4X scope on it . That gun is accurate but not much fun to shoot with full loads. Maybe I will keep an eye out for a mould for it to cast bullets it could make a nice choice for that if I load it at at lower velocities. I am thinking that with a 1 in 10 twist it should shoot blunt nosed bullets up to 200 grs.? Any thoughts? also give me another good use for that 5 pound can of SR-4759 that I have and at reduced pressures large pistol primers will be fine to.
