Thanks to my LEE hardness testing kit I have found the perfect alloy for my hunting!!:drinks:
With 20 part WW + 10 part pure lead + 2 part tin, water quenched, my bullets for the 405 WCF weigh 357 grains without lube or GC, and the hardness on the Brinnell scale is 17.9.
Absolutly perfect!!!!!:castmine: :castmine:

Now it is time for the load bench, and tomorrow morning I will be out testing accuracy.:Fire: :Fire:

405 WCF;
That seems to be an awful lot of tin in that alloy. You state "2 parts tin". That is 16% tin!
Maybe you meant "2%" tin?

No, I mean 2 parts tin.
2 kg ww, ( 20 hg, or 4.41 pund ), 1 kg lead, ( 10 hg, or 2.204 pound ) and 0.2 kg, ( 2 hg, or 0.44 pound ) tin.
That is 3.2 kg alloy, ( 7.05 pound )
Cast very nice bullets, and the mold is perfectly filled out.

Dale,

How did you get 16%?

Unless my math is wrong, the % tin (excluding what is in the wheelweights) is 2/32 or 6.25%.

Still pretty high by most standards, but as long as 405 is happy...

I posted this a week ago or so but ive found with the "NEW AGE" wws ive been getting that are a hodgepodge of everything from pure to zinc that lately its taken me about 5 percent tin to notice that my tin is helping the cast.

The Ranch-Dog bullets shoot's very nice in my rifle.
I killed some moose with them last fall, and it was great.
I loaded them to 2346 fps with Vihtavuori N120, and accuracy was good.
Here is a pict of one of the moose that the RD bullet killes.

The first test with the new .414 bullet in my 405 WCF was very good.
I loaded with 40 grs Vihtavuori N130 and got a 3-shot group that was around 2 in with open sights at 55 Yards.
Average velocity, messured at 10 feet, was 1814 fps.
Good start load, with good accuracy, but a little to slow for the hunt.
I will go for 2000 fps - 2050 fps, and there I will stop.
I will take a picture of the group tomorrow, and post it.

Unless my math is wrong, the % tin (excluding what is in the wheelweights) is 2/32 or 6.25%.

Still pretty high by most standards,
It's only high when compared to the 1 and 2 percent tin mixes that you WW guys favor.
The well-known 16 to 1 lead/tin alloy contains that same percentage of the lovely stuff.

Ahem!! I will NOT tell you how I arrived at 16%. I was WRONG!! You don't need to know HOW wrong [smilie=1:.

All I can do is plead, "I stayed up too late!"

Pitiful, pitiful, pitiful...
