This may not be an answerable question with being more specific on which ones, but who has the best prices on powders and primers nowadays. Like many others I stocked up before the shortage a few years ago and have finally started running low. Need to replenish some basics and thought this would be a good place to ask.

Yes for mail order I agree, but if you're in SW Michigan, look no farther than Schanz in Otsego.
I bought 8 lbs. of IMR 8028 yesterday for $134.95, 5 lbs. of R-22 for 84.95. Federal 215's for 29.95/1000 and 210's for 29.95/1000. I'm close, the gas is a lot cheaper than 25 bucks in haz mat plus shipping.

Actually, when you account for Hazmat fees, I've found the local gunshow to be the best deal. They are usually pretty competitive with online prices but no added on Haz fees. Do have to pay local taxes and show entry though. I usually buy a case of primers at the same time, so that doubles my Hazmat savings since they cant ship together.
Of course I'm then limited to whats on the shelf, so no black powder - but all the popular smokeless is there...

Yup, I find my local shop to be a little cheaper if I buy smaller amounts of supplies. I also like to sit down and visit for a couple hours in the afternoon, LOL

". . . so that doubles my Hazmat savings since they cant ship together."

Powder and primers can be shipped in the same container for one $25 Haz-Mat fee.

On my last Powder Valley purchase -- including Haz-Mat and shipping -- I saved about $102, than if I had purchased locally. And, it was a small order, only 5000 primers and two-pounds of powder. Buy more, save more.

What kind of powder does your local guy charge you that much more for?

I didn't look to see what the shipping charge was, but the powder prices seemed to be pretty much in line with what I generally see any place else.

This was just a quick look, but gee whiz.

Markbo,
To avoid the HAZMAT fee, or if you just want to buy locally, 10 Ring has always had the best prices for me. That and their staff is great to shoot the breeze with. I always end up spending more than I had intended when I go there. Other than that, I have found that while I don't like dealing with them, that Carter's Country usually has decent prices on both powder and primers. At least the one on Treaschwig anyway.
Hope this helps.

"What kind of powder does your local guy charge you that much more for?"

Upstate Matt,
If your question was directed toward me, the powder was Alliant 2400. Locally, it's $28 a pound but $15.50, from Powder Valley.

Wow! That's crazy.

I guess I can add to my gratitude list that I have a couple old time gunshops around that know how to keep their customers happy and still stay in business.

I sure don't get the prices on primers. They seem to be all over the board lately. I just bought some CCI SR primers for $21/thousand, and I see them for nearly double that at a couple places.

Grafs has Tula primers on sale for $80 per K and $10 off Hazmat to boot. Hard to beat those prices, but you have to order 10K primers minimum.
Still a good deal all around.

I've just been to Graf's site. No Tula primers shown. The only Wolf primers available are small pistol magnum at $18.99/K

Powder Valley has some Wolf primers at what looks like closeout prices. Their Tula primers are $20/K for standard primers. That works to an even $100 for 5K.

Some here have indicated that Wolf and Tula are the same.

If you can hold out for a deal, places like Powder Valley will run specials on primers, etc. If you buy so much (10K primers, etc.) they will pay for the hazmat and shipping! I ordered 10K Tula primers and 4 Lbs of Bullseye this spring, and paid only for the price of the items...save alot of $$$.

As was already said...Powder Valley is a good on-line place. You might want to consider getting a couple of friends toether to make an on-line bulk purchase. if you split the shipping/hazmat charges, it works out pretty cheap as well.

Locally, primers are still kind of expensive. Lowest is $25/1K for pistol. Highest is $35. Powder prices are through the roof! I ran short on Win 231 last week and picked up 1 LB at the local shop...paid $24! Ouch!

I don't know if they still do it or not but I have picked up supplies at the big Tulsa Gun Show from Powder valley. So if any of you are planning on attending give them a call and see if they will be there and wouldn't mind bringing your order with them. The only Glitch is that they wanted cash payment at the show, but as long as you know that it is not a problem. Give them a call, the show is in early November I think, but you would need to have your order in a week or more before.
