I have been ask this question countless times over the years. That is what gun would you take if you could only take 3 guns with you in a doomsday scenario.
If you had to get out of dodge knowing that the interstructure of modern living won't be the same for a long time.
I thought about this and I think I would grab my 10/22 ruger and all the .22 bullets I could get hands on, My .40 taurus and all the amo I got and then my cap and ball black powder pistol.
Now everyone is probably wondering why a .22 that is the one that I can carry the most amo for and probably the easiest to scrouge amo for. you could probably find .22 s about anywhere you look and would be overlooked be a lot of people.
My .40 would be carried as a self defence and would save the amo as long as could.
Now the black powder would be the one that I would end up with after modern amo runs out. I am guessing that modern amo would run out after a while the black powder you can make balls powder and even the caps. So a lot of people would pass on old school but I would take it because I think you would end up going old school.

And some sort of high capacity 9mm bottom feeder sidearm. Glock, CZ, XD, Browning, pick one.

What possible scenerio would result in lots of 5.7 FN ammo laying around? I cannot imagine one.

Considering ammo might have to be scrounged, it would be wise to pick the more common calibers, this being said, I think a smart man would choose the following.........
Winchester 70-150-900 for his rifle,
M1873 11mm French Ordnance Revolver, for a side arm.
And for foraging chipmunks, sparrows, moles, snakes etc. any quality made double barrel 4 ga. shotgun should do.

Do we get to have multiple barrels??? Say 870 with rifled, and full choke barrels. M14 with scope, .22 CCM revolver. Or, maybe an Encore, or Handi with six barrels.

BLR in 308, 10-22, 45 Blackhawk dual cylinder. Location makes a ton of difference.

The most common ammo you are likely to find is (this may vary with location):
.22 rimfire
.30-06
5.56/.223
9mm
12 gage shotgun

Most versitile ammo would be the old Black Powder cartridges that can be loaded with either smokless or BP (you can make your own BP):
.45 Colt
.45-70
.44-40

Most reliable guns are the simplist like single action revolvers, break action single shot rifles and shotguns or a bolt action if you want magazine fed. Most semi automatics are ammo sensitive and if you can't get the ammo they like or reload with a strange powder or wrong weight bullet it becomes a single shot stovepiper. A cap and ball revolver with a conversion cylinder or two (different cartridges) would be handy and could be fed for a long time, say a Ruger Old Army with cylinders for .45 ACP and .45 Colt.

The guns that will still be shooting after all the cartridges, primers, smokless powder, and percussion caps are gone will be the Flint Lock rifle and shotgun which is why they were used for 500 years.

10-22
Glock 21
Marlin .30-30

Perfect scenario for survival. Small game, self defense and medium game.

Everything you need to survive. Light weight, ammo for all would be easy enough to come by if you ran out and all three just plain work.

French soldier at ramparts of castle in Monty Python film--"I fart in your general direction!"

Ruger 10/22 for certain. Probably S&W 686 x 4". 870 Express 12 gauge with both barrels--rifle-sighted 20", and 28" Rem-choke. AR-15, with polite California parts removed/replaced. The rest would be traded for food and ammo.

I stand by my 1894CB Marlin ,Sec6, one of these days I will find the double BP scatter gun in the mean time the 2 357s and a 50 Hawken will have to do.

The 357s because here bears ,lions, and coyotes are a bigger threat to larder than bad guys and they're big enough to be usefull w/BP if it goes past the couple thousand loaded/components to load contained in couple of ammo cans.

Does Honey get 3 too? Add the SA 45, CB Rem and the double 12ga.

I do live w/an ammo depot on 3 sides of me so 9mm,308 and 12ga would be better choices depending on the disaster/martial law/social meltdown situation.

Disaster here means massive earthquake or volcano in 90 days the population will have eaten everything w/in 20 miles and those w/o tools, knowledge,or skills will be gone either through attrition or seeking FEMA. Productive wild lands are a long ways off from here.

Social colapse let's see 3000 people in a county the size of Maryland, not really likely the bad guys are going to last a long time.

Marshall law we're all screwed, blackout lights head east or west for clean springs w/the safety of my clan.

I am with Bret this question has been asked a lot. So think about it , if something really bad happened quickly you would not have a choice it would be what you have with you were you are at when it happened. If you are in a airport you are down to tooth&nails can you plan on being were you can defend yourself if something happens?

Yeah, I know, but I think there are at least 2 other threads running now asking the same question.

I always suspect they are really trying to ask another question. "What is a good SHTF gun and why?" But they don't want to sound like a Noobe which is why I answered as I did. Over the years my opinion of the "Best Gun" has changed and it will probably change again in the future. I keep thinking and anaylizing and try to have reasons for my choices that are better than "It looks cool".

What is important to remember is whatever gun you got at the time is better than the gun you wish you had but don't.

Ruger 10/22
Ruger Mini-14
Ruger GP-100

I know these work and you can find ammo just about anywhere. Also ammo for these three are light enough that you can carry some quantity and not get too weighed or bulked down. The mini-14 would be more self defense than for hunting though.

1.If I had to leave home, the M1917 would come down from the house roof and be mounted in the truck bed.
2. I'd man the M1918 BAR
3. My wife would handle the M3 SMG

A Glock 22 with my 9mm barrellel installed and the 40 carried for pickup ammo.
A Midsize AR for bad guys
A Marlin 39 with a few bricks for rabbits. The Marlin can shoot 22 shorts, longs, LR and cb caps.

P.S. the Ruger 10/22 is only good for Long rifles .22s.

Marlin 917 in .17HMR for some hunting.
SKS or Mini 14 for bad guys and hunting larger stuff.
Hi capacity 9mm for sidearm.

A box of 2000 rounds of 17HMR weighs less than 17lbs. Bolt action rifle: 2000 rounds should last longer than you do.
