Hi Folks,

I'm thinking of having a rifle built and will need a barrel for it. Presently I'm having a great time with a Parker Hale Volunteer, which takes 0.451" bullets, loads very easily (the weight of the ramrod is almost enough to run the bullets down), and shoots very accurately with 450 gr bullets. It's a military pattern rifle, and I'd like to duplicate the shooting characteristics with a sporting pattern rifle, probably a Wesson.

My question is: who can supply the barrel?

Take care, Tom

I am just finishing an underhammer rifle that will have 54 rb barrel and a 45 caliber slug barrel. This may be right up your alley as it's a traditional style of rifle that would make a dandy hunting rifle too. Google Blue Grouse and look at his guns.

Are you looking for a .451 bore diameter with groove diameter larger? A .458 barrel would be .450" bore and .458 groove diameter. Almost any barrel company can do one that size, same as a 45-70 barrel.

Hi John,

No, I'm hoping to match the barrel dimensions of my Parker Hale Volunteer. The bullets are 0.452" diameter.

Thanks, Tom

I shoot a 450gr .451" in a Green Mountain 1:18" twist barrel on a TC Renegade stock. The problem with GM is finding one since they're making military contract barrels and don't have the time or inclination to make much else. You might try Hoyt or Rayl and see if they would make one.

GM is an interesting option, as I already have a T/C Renegade. However, they only show 1:30" 45 caliber barrels as drop-in replacements. I don't think it will stabilize the long Lyman bullet. Is your 1:18" barrel a discontinued replacement barrel, or did you breech it for the T/C yourself?

Thanks, Tom

I bought the barrel on this forum, so I can't tell you how it started life.

Call Pecatonica Long Rifles and ask them if they have any 1:18" .45s. I was in a discussion with them a while ago about GM's backorder of another caliber I wanted and for some reason we talked about the .45s.

If they have them, that would be the quickest, easiest way to get into a really fast twist rifle. If they don't, there is no telling how long the backorder will be. GM makes great muzzleloader barrels but the money is in their other work so we're low on the totem pole.

Here's a pic of my rifle. I took the under rib off because I'm not hunting with this rifle and don't need to carry a ramrod. The Poor Man's Caseless Quigley Rifle.

I have a GM 458 with a 1-18 twist. They made a short run of these a few years ago. Mine shoots great. Ron
