I need some advice. I have 300 pounds of weights(the kind you exercise with) . I think they are cast iron. From what I found on the internet cast iron is going for about .79 per pound. Went to the scrap yard and the lady tells me they are short iron and they can give $12.50 per 100 pounds. First,is there any way to tell if this is cast iron? Is she right or would I be getting ripped off? Sorry, I have no way of posting any photos. Thanks guys!

If you multiply $.79 X 100 lbs, the result is $79.00/100 lbs. Her offer sounds a little low, wouldn't you say?

I think you would be darned lucky to get that for the weights. Ten cents a pound would be more like it around here.

A "short iron" is any club between a #7 and your lob wedge.

(Sorry, just HAD to...)

The .79 per pound was off of one website. I realize that wouldn't be the same everywhere. I still don't get the "short iron" deal. It is cast iron or it's not. She couldn't explain it to me.

Read the fine print, We buy from you at 12.5 cents a pound and sell it to china for 79 cents a pound. Short iron, try short end of the stick.

I sell steel scrap, not iron, but .79/pound sounds way high to me. $12.50 a hundredweight sounds directionally reasonable.

Recently, for very clean steel bushelling, in perfect condition and neatly loaded for the hauler, I get $450 per metric ton, do the math it's about 20 cents a pound. And I am sure my stuff is getting the best kind of market price that can be gotten, we are selling lots frequently and the scrap yard counts on us to provide to mills -- not like a one off sale.

Scrap iron here sells for around 10 cents a pound.

slide, you would be much better off to sell them as what they are, exercise weights. Put an ad on Craigslist...Ray

That helped, thanks. I had tried to find info but only came up with golf stuff. You learn something new everyday.

As was mentioned, sell them on Craigslist. Someone out there is looking for weights to outfit their home gym. Find out what they cost new at Walmart and offer them for 1/3 or 1/2 of new on Craigslist.

You might also try to sell them to the garden tractor guys ... They are always looking for weights, what shape are they?

I sold a load of scrap iron and a bunch of #2 Brass
So I am not 100% sure what I got for each
But I think it was just over $300 a ton

But I know there are 2 prices posted for scrap iron localy
1 is for less than a ton and the other is for a ton or better

I believe it was $310 or $320 a ton
Either $ .10 or $ .11 a lb for less that a ton

But you have to call around
As I called 3 places , 1 place was just over $ 180 a ton for srap iron regaurdless of how much you had

Are they Olympic sized weights and are you in Northern Illinois?

If not, try Play It Again Sports or Craigslist as mentioned. You'll do a lot better than 12 cents a pound
