As the new guy, apologies if this has been covered in detail but here goes.

Has anyone tried teflon tape as lubricant. Tried it when I was casting and shooting a lot and was pleased. Don't remember the velocitioe, but in 30 cal it shot clean and accuracy was good at higher than normal velocities.

A big plus was the really neat little white fluffies that went everywhere w/each shot.

I tried it a few times. The results were no better than traditional lube, and it was very time consuming.

Ok, let's go a little further.... Can teflon wrapped bullets be revved up (if so, just how far?) with soft lead bullets like say, paper patched can for instance. Speed is up for grabs, the question is, how fast without leading, and with good accuracy. Let's assume that there are no other factors scrooing up accuracy, like deformed or deforming boolits, too high of pressures, and boogered up firing chambers/freebore/leade, or non performing lubes.

I used the teflon boolits in a .444 Marlin at 2300 fps. I was using straight linotype, 429244 240 gr. gas checked. I could shoot 2" groups at 100 yards with this load, but I could also do that using conventional lube. Someone else will have to jump in on using softer alloys.

Some folks have tried it for making paper patch bullets but quickly determined 25# cotton paper is the way to go.

I tried it in several calibers from 7mm to the big 45-70. I used Lyman #2 alloy for the smaller calibers and 1/20 or softer in the 45-70. Normal cast velocities were easily bettered in all cases. Accuracy was equal or better than normal lubes. In the 30-30 case with a 150 grain Loverign style I could equal FACTORY velocity and get better accuracy. I could get 2400 fps in the 7tc/u (14" contender)and decent accuracy with a 120 grain bullet,Better accuracy was found at about 2200fps. All loads I used needed a gas check and got one.

How was the teflon tape applied? Just wrapped twice around like you would on a pipe?

lefti, yes .
If you use to much teflon accuracy suffers. I cut a bunch of strips from the roll, I have 1/2" ,3/4" and 1" rolls from when I worked(or at least was employed). Then I lay them on a mouse pad and roll the bullet on them. I have NOT tried the bullets without a gas check. I have checked them first then taped and taped first before checking. Accuracy was not significantly better either way.

I have never giving this lube method a thought. With the nice Lee Brown Alox on the market why would a person want to?

Then there is that nice Blue lube and nice Red lube to fall back on.

Makes me wonder what Shemp would have to say about this?

Out of here,
