I got about 250 lb of new lead roof jacks and was wondering how to use them?
Any of you that have used them did you melt them whole or did you cut out the solder joints? I need something for muzzle loader boolits so would the joints make a too hard alloy if I melt them whole?

My shop is next to a roofer. He gives me about 50lbs a week.
What I do, is strip whatever shingles are stuck to it. I then melt them. One of the lubes, or fluxes as it were for these is Carnuba oil.
It makes the asphalt just plain get liquid and float to the top.
One thing to watch, the asphalt will stick to the bottom of whatever pot you are melting them in. In time, it will slow your melt. I use a screwdriver to scrape the bottom while I melt. Chunks come to the top. The Carnuba oil will make them liquid.
That is a great source of lead. What little solder is there, you will not notice.
When I cast, I crank up my Lee 20lb bottom pour.
It works great.
I haven't found it to stink on melting either.
I have chunked them up, but I find no faster way either way.

I am lucky as these are brand new. Nothing on them at all.

With new ones melt them down and castem. Will be good to feed that Musketoon. Or any M/L.
Great score.
