So, for whatever reason every single firearm you own is now gone. Your insurence company is being wonderful and will completly re-imburse your loss (I know I'm in fantasy land here).

With what you know now, what would you buy? Most of us have accumulated our weapons over the years. I suspect often with any kind of real plan if you know what I mean.

So?

I have not been impulse buying. I try to keep it to no more than one new one a year and put some thought into what that should be. I long ago sold/traded off a few that no longer interest me. I would replace everything I have now with little or no alterations.

I would prioritize the ones that are hardest to replace; pre64 Winchesters, pinned and recessed Smith & Wessons, 03 Springfield, Garand. I would worry about the ones you can still buy over the counter last.

A Pre-safety Marlin 336 Microgroove in .30-30.

Winchester push-feed in .30-'06, but if I were to replace it it would be a .35 Whelen.

Ruger 10-22.

Winchester Super X--ONE.

Kimber .45 ACP.

Uberti 1872 Open Top, 7.5", .45 Colt. I don't ever plan to be without one of these, best handling revolvers on the planet.

I'd also replace all of my current Ruger revolvers, especially the GP100, and I'd never buy another Smith and Wesson.

If I only had these to play with forever I'd be a pretty happy man. I'd save the rest of the hypothetical insurance check for some other toys, there are a lot of guns I have and use that I wouldn't necessarily replace, but might go for something different.

Does a BAR or an MG 42 count?

I have never sold a firearm therefore I still have my starter rifle for all my various disciplines. I would probably not replace those. Its my best customs that would hurt, my high power prone guns could all be duplicated as everything is still available but they typically take about 2 years from beginning to end to have made. My smallbore prone rifles would not be able to be duplicated, Karl Kenyon has passed on so no where to get triggers for them anymore.

Guess I'd just buy an Anschutz 2013 spacegun and use it for both prone and 3P. I'd probably buy a Fienwerkbau 700 air rifle instead of another Walther. Must have an M1 Garand. I'd buy another Armalite NM AR-15, love that rifle and they are a little nicer now than 11 or 12 years ago when I bought mine. I'd have to find another No4Mk2 Enfield new in the wrap and use that for mil surp bolt rifle as I do now, that rifle shoots amazingly well. Probably buy a Grunig and Elimger 300m free rifle in 6BR rather than have another Remington 700 built and glassed into an Anschutz stock. I would definitley have CPA duplicate my 45-70 and 45-90 black powder cartridge target rifles, man those rifles are two of my favorites.

Seriously doubt I'd bother "collecting" vintage 22 target rifles again or mil surps. They were fun to learn about and find but now that is kind of over for me it seems.

I think I might buy more pistols but I would look for and buy properly built NRA Bullseye pistols rather than buy new factory pistols. Definitely find a proper 38 special target revolver for sure, wish I had the time and where with all to get one now.

Who knows for sure. LOL :bigsmyl2:

I would buy a quarter as many at four times the quality. I wonder if that is mathematically possible.

I would focus much more like I am now. Instead of one of these and one of those it would be much fewer but high quality ones.

I doubt I would own a pistol in anything but the 45 calibers. I just don't use or need anything smaller or bigger.

I would definaltey end up with lever rifles. I really had no idea how capable they are until just a few years ago. Them and the H&R single shots really do what I want to do in rifles.

Hindsight is sometimes interesting.

First would be a C Sharps Highwall in either .40-70 or .40-65, then a High Standard .22 Target. Then NM M-1A, M-1, HK USP, two Ruger Vaqueros in .45 Colt, a Marlin 1894 CB in .45 Colt, a 20 ga Coachgun, a .40-65 Lever, and then start looking for probably a 32-40 single shot.

How far back are we going? I'd probably buy gold first. Then I would be in a lot better financial shape to buy the 4 guns on my wish list. [smilie=p:

Glock 26, Glock 17, Milsurp K98, GP100. Guns come and go in my house as I lose interest, but those 4 will always be around.

I like blued steel and wood, so most of the "off the shelf" plastic wonders can stay on the shelf.

I might buy a nice kimber or CZ bolt rifle, or have a custom mauser 98 built.

and a 1911, with the same description, blued steel and wood. nice, but not a race gun.

I never could get excited about a 1911. I have had a few through the years, but they always end up going out the door as they get boring...again. My guns get shot and holstered alot. I do alot of hiking, climbing, etc. My guns end up with holster wear, scratches, and dings in pretty short order. I tend to shy away from bluing and wood for that reason. Although I will have a nice new remington coming home soon with nice bluing and wood.

I would buy a quarter as many at four times the quality. I wonder if that is mathematically possible.

I would say that is a good plan.

I would probably start with:

A magnum pistol: Ruger SBHH .41 mag or .44 mag

12 ga. shotgun: Rem 1187 or Ruger Red Label

CCW: Kahr CW9

Bolt rifle: Rem 700 in 30-06 rebarreled for 35-Whelen

C&R: Garand, 1903A3 and M39

....many more to follow of course

My first real interest in firearms was and still is handguns and that is where I would start. S&W revolvers, 1911s, Colt and Ruger SAs, various compact autos, other makes and models all over the board with specific goals to reach.

Next would be the rifles: Pre-64 70s, quality levers (Winchester and Marlin), various other quality bolt rifles, not much interest in semi-autos or pumps.

Last would be the scatter guns, semi-autos, doubles, O/Us, pumps, singles. But, as age further degrades my vison and strength, this category may take a higher significance than before. Too much mileage in too short of time.

The challenge would be in finding the required quality of items in each of these brackets, then to get them in hand.

The collection would be the same but as most have said of better grade. Sure I'd replace the blued wood BPS field steel special, I'd find a nice nickle steel fanned walnut 26" Model 12 maybe even a trap. And a 3" SuperPose. A real HiPower w/o the mag disconect. A 454 RBH 5?" . Custom Mausers 22-250,257 Roberts,7x57,30-06',35 Whelen and 460 S&W/410 ,all identical w/QD scope mounts w/a sub 100 peep and flip up "safari" type for for suited ranges to caliber. 3 1911s,long slides, maybe Kimbers,38 super,10 mm,and ofcourse 45 ACP. And an AR w/ a couple of GI uppers in WTSHTF,invasion, marshal law, open rebellion, use up the other guys supplies 1st cartridges. Just in case.

As thrifty as I am, I would still go willy nilly into everygun show looking randomly for that great deal as I do now. Looking for the same firearms as I look for now, but replacing some of my passed treasures as I stumble onto similar ones...maybe ???

with that said,
I have a few safe queens that I haven't shot for many years, one in particular is a Benchrest Custom Mauser VZ24 in 243win that is just the most awesome tack driver, anyone, even someone unfamiliar with it, can sit on the bench and shoot grasshoppers at 100yards with factory loads or hand loads, I haven't found a load it doesn't like (within correct parameters per rifle twist).

I doubt i will never stumble onto a $400 tackdriver as such and since I rarely drag her out, I suppose it wouldn't make since to even look for another one.

I'd still have an H&R 12 gauge. Everybody needs an inexpensive utility gun.

My Remington Model 12 .22 has sentimental value. I couldn'r replace the sentimental value, so I'd get something more accurate -- maybe a nice bolt, or maybe a 10/22.

A good 357 revolver, probably a SW686 or a Colt Trooper. And a good snubby. And a Ruger Mark III, my Mark II is so practical.

And a Ruger #1 in .270.

Basically I would have fewer shotguns, and my rifle selection changes a little bit. I don't wingshoot much anymore.
